The stadium of the local premier division football club is there, an open air theatre, several ponds and even -temporarely- a circus. But also a Commonwealth War Cimeterary 1939-1945. You can not compare it with the Groesbeek Canadian War Cimetery. Not that well maintained. The tomb stones here are grey and sometimes even dirty. In Groesbeek it is all very well organised, with donations from Canadian families.

2017/12/30 – Politicians are messing about money for parties

FvD-voorman Thierry BaudetIn a The Hague café a quarrel has recently arisen between various political parties. They are at odds with each other about the financing of parties. The parties were gathered on the top floor of the café Millers in The Hague in order to be updated about new rules that come up about how parties get money, both through government subsidies and through private donations. What started two weeks ago as a leisurely gathering with party presidents and other delegates eventually degenerated into tirades, sneezing remarks and reproaches. Especially Thierry Baudet of Forum for Democracy demanded a leading role, as well as Selçuk Öztürk from the Turkish party Denk. Baudet was, according to several people present, loudly angry at the fact that a committee set up by the Cabinet wants lower donations to be made public more quickly. Now donors can remain anonymous if they give less than 4,500 euros. ,,You can just eat out with a couple of men!” Baudet exclaimed according to the witnesses. He just wants plenty of room for anonymous givers.

Threshold up

Baudet maintains his remarks when asked: “Just go and eat with your 20-man campaign team.” “He wants the threshold to go up: donations up to 500,000 euros would have to be transferred completely anonymously. Baudet: ,,I understand that people who have some money and support a party do not want that in the newspaper.” Privacy is about transparency, he confirms. ,, Joh, these are just cartel-protective measures, because the Dutch do not dare to indicate that they support new parties.”

The Party for Freedom (PVV) has long felt that donations should for the most part be anonymous. Yet no one had shown up on behalf of the party. Nonetheless, leader Geert Wilders will be happy: according to those present, the committee will propose that parties only receive subsidies from the government on the basis of their number of seats. Now a party must also have at least a thousand members, but the PVV does not meet that criterion because Wilders is the only member. As a result of the amendment, the PVV, as the second largest party in parliament, can expect to receive about two million euros in subsidies every year. The Turkish “Denk”‘s party chairman and Member of Parliament Öztürk ignited that feeling. ,,Geertje is being mated again! ”, he exclaimed. Öztürk says in a reaction that it is better if parties are under the control of members if they receive a lot of community money. He confirms that he has also argued this in the café in The Hague. ,,I said yes. The point is that there are checks and balances when parties get money. That is more in balance if a party has members.”

At the meeting in the upper room in The Hague, besides Baudet and Öztürk, among others, the presidents Christianne van der Wal (Frredom & Democracy – VVD), Ruth Peetoom (Christian Democrats – CDA) and Letty Demmers (Democrats 1966 – D66) were present, as well as the director of the PvdA party bureau and the treasurer of the Socialist Party (SP). In addition, the chairman of the committee, former Christian Union (CU) leader Kars Veling, was of the party to share the main lines of his conclusions. The committee is expected to report officially before 31 December. According to various attendees, the Veling commission will also propose Minister of the Interior Kajsa Ollongren to legally prohibit foreign funding of parties. This measure is a line through the PVV’s bill, because that party receives several tens of thousands of euros annually from the American David Horowitz Freedom Center.

The present coalition (VVD / CDA / D66 / Christian Union) had a majority of 1 seat in the House at the time they started (after a formation period of 216 days…). The coalition had 65 seats as per December 19. We live with a minority cabinet presently 😦 . There have been several scandals. As the parliament is on reces, public opinion goes on. The results will be -presently- even worse. Can’t wait untill there is a mail of the Opinion Panel: “What party would you vote, if there were elections now?”

2017/11/29 – Taking poison in court

Croatian Prime Minister confirms: Praljak dies after taking poison.

Slobodan Praljak (72) died this afternoon after he had taken poison when he heard his sentence in the Yugoslavia Tribunal in The Hague, as confirmed by the Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković. The Public Prosecution Service in The Hague is investigating the case. Plenković has conveyed his condolences to the family. Praljak received his sentence on appeal this morning, but took a sip of some substance after hearing his sentence. Then he said: “Mr. Judge, I took poison,” after which the session was suspended. A spokesperson for the tribunal also confirmed that the ex-army leader died in a hospital in the Hofstad. He did not go into detail about the criminal investigation and could not answer the question of how Praljak came up with the means he was drinking before the judge’s eyes. In the first instance, the research focuses on assistance with suicide and violation of the Medicines Act, according to the Public Prosecution Service, which does not want to make any further announcements.

‘Crime scene’

The follow-up of the session was continued after the incident in another room, because room 1 was closed by the Dutch authorities. ,, It is now a crime scene ”, the judge explained. The police performed on-site investi-gations. The UN court is scheduled to give its final verdict today against a handful of suspects: Jadranko Prlic, Bruno Stojic, Slobodan Praljak, Milivoj Petkovic and Valentin Coric. But when he heard his sentence, Praljak said to the judge: “Slobodan Praljak is not a war criminal. That’s why I reject your statement. “After taking the poison and his remark, the livestream from the courtroom jumped on black.

The Bosnian Croat Praljak was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2013 for crimes he committed in and around Mostar. Praljak was a high soldier who commanded the Hague International Court of Appeal. He was responsible for the war crimes against the Bosnian Muslims in about thirty places in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Praljak was also in charge of the police force in the early 1990s. He has completed several studies including one at the technical university, but he also studied philosophy. Besides Praljak, the accused are four other former political and military leaders of Herceg-Bosna, a mini-state that was proclaimed at the time of the civil war in Bosnia. Among them, the then Prime Minister Prlic. Last week, the former Bosnian commander Ratko Mladic was sentenced to a life sentence by the Yugoslavia Tribunal in The Hague. Mladic shouted during the statement: “Lies, you must be ashamed!”

Attorney complains checks Criminal court: Bringing poisons is easy

How could the 72-year-old Slobodan Praljak commit suicide in the Hague before the eyes of the Yugoslavia Tribunal? The fact that the suspect could casually take poison to the courtroom gives rise to bewilderment all over the world. Justice could not yet answer the question of how Praljak came up with the drug and how he managed to bring it into court. The Public Prosecution Service in The Hague first of all checks whether the convicted person had assistance with suicide and to what extent there was an infringement of the Medicines Act. “Mr. Justice, I took poison,” Praljak said, after taking a sip of the substance. Shortly before his act, the Bosnian Croat was sentenced to 20 years on appeal. The prominent Serbian lawyer Toma Fila, who regularly defends suspects of war crimes before the International Criminal Court in The Hague, does not react surprised. He says it is ‘absolutely possible’ and ‘simple’ to bring poison into the courtroom.

‘Liquid not registered’

Opposite news agency AP, Fila says that the security check at the tribunal resembles that of an airport. ,, They check for metal objects, such as belts, loose change and shoes. They also take out mobile phones. “Pills and small amounts of liquid are not recorded according to counsel. A spokesperson for the tribunal confirms that the former army leader died in a hospital in The Hague after drinking the poison. He could not answer the question of how Praljak arrived at the waist, which he drank in the eyes of the judge. He could not give details of the criminal investigation either. Justice minister Ferdinand Grapperhaus does not want to react to the event in substance and awaits the investigation of the Public Prosecution Service. Grapperhaus does not believe that the Netherlands, as the host country of the Yugoslavia Tribunal, is damaged by the suicide of Praljak and by the fact that he saw the chance to bring poison into the courtroom. “The Netherlands still has an excellent reputation,” the minister told the NOS. ,, And has done very well. ”

Ethnic cleansing

The elderly Praljak was one of six Bosnian Croatian leaders who, with the support of neighboring Croatia, turned against the Bosnian army during the war in former Yugoslavia. Their aim was to establish an independent Croatian region within Bosnia, just as the Bosnian Serbs did with the help of Serbia. Praljak was found guilty of involvement in crimes against the Muslim population, who had to clear the field in the mini-state in formation through ethnic cleansing. Before he took the poison to himself, the convict exclaimed: “Slobodan Praljak is not a war criminal. That is why I reject your statement. ”

2017/11/26 – First snow of the season has fallen, slippery on the road

At 03.00AM the first snowflakes of this autumn have fallen. For example, wet snow was reported in, among others, the counties Friesland, Utrecht, Drenthe and South-Limbourg. In the northern half of the country it can be locally slippery today due to short fierce hailstorms.

According to the ANWB (Road control service), several accidents have already happened on the Dutch motorways. On the A6 between Almere and Lelystad, the A7 Wieringerwerf in the direction of Medemblik and on the A28 Ermelo in the direction of Elspeet, traffic is hindered by accidents.

Rijkswaterstaat (Governamental surveillance of all infra-structure) warns to take account of local slipperiness. “Adjust your driving style to the conditions on the road.” The KNMI (Governamental weather information service) also warned about this last night and therefore issued code yellow, which has since been withdrawn.

According to Weerplaza (website for weather information), a bit of wet snow belongs to the last days of November. That is because of the cold air. Also a degree of frost in the night is not uncommon. During the daytime it will be 5 or 6 degrees in the course of next week and in the night the mercury will soon be around zero again.

2017/10/19 – Deirdre Angenent

Opera star and time for the family

Rising operas Deirdre Angenent (33) appeared last week in Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito: “The opera this evening in Nimwegen feels like a home match. It’s the first time I’m standing with a big orchestra. We used to go there with our parents. They were both in the Nimweeg’s Bach Choir and had their performances there. Great, especially because of the bitter balls afterwards, haha. There will be fifty acquaintances tonight.

“At high school, I was at the NSG, I followed a pre-education for the conservatory. Saxophone, because singing did not work so well at the time. My voice was not quite good because I used it wrong. I had a lot of speech therapy, because I really liked singing. I first studied Dutch at the HAN, after a year I went to the conservatory. That was busy, yes, but singing felt like free time. I even gave a year Dutch but that many talk broke me up. I was doing the Opera Academy, very intensive. In two years I had to perform four operar rolls all the way. ‘La Clemenza di Tito’ was one of. “When I finished the academy, I got my first child. In three years we have had three beautiful children. The career had to be in the fridge, which was not always easy for me personally. The agents were not happy either. You usually have to do auditions for roles that you will not be able to interpret in two years. That’s not going to happen with such a stomach. I wanted to reach the summit, but also children together with my husband. Now they are 4, 5 and 6 and go to school. My parents live next to us and they can take a lot of care. ,,In 2013 and 2014 I participated in many competitions and they were very successful. First in Bucharest, third in Istanbul, third in Sydney, third in Milan. Since then it’s going to be fantastic. I’m still a youngster and still learn from my experienced colleagues. For example, divide energy, do not give everything at first. This also applies to daily life. My dream is to do three or four productions a year and also have enough time for my family.”

From her website:

Next season will be quite exciting, with very grateful parts to sing! First of all, Vitellia in La Clemenza di Tito by Mozart with the orchestra of the Eighteenth century during oktober in a concert tour through Holland. After that, in december I will sing Gertud in Hänsel und Gretel by Hümperdink in beautiful Nancy, France. In April I will make by role debut as Komponist in Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard strauss in Meiningen. I will perform the part of Venus in der Wartburg near Meiningen in June and last but not least, I make my debut as Sieglinde in Die Walküre by Richard Wagner in Aalto- Musiktheater, Essen, Germany! Please take a look at my events for more details! The season after that will also be quiet exciting with Judit in Bluebeards’ Castle and Eboli in Don Carlo by Verdi. I will probably return to Meiningen and Essen and will sing the grateful part of Komponist again in Lausanne. And, I will sing my first Verdi Requiem.

Hope to meet you in the audience soon!

All best,

Every year mid-October there is the so called event: “Days of Nimwegen History”. Everything is then -during three days- according to the life during the Middle Ages. In the Saint Stephan Church food is prepared like in the middle ages, people are dressed accordingly and there are exhibitions and lectures.

2017/10/11 – Owen (17) solves a cube with one hand within 17 seconds

Owen de Heer is seventeen years old and participates in the Dutch championship of Rubik’s cubes. This championship was held today in the Utrecht Highlands. Last year he won the league one-handed: solving the classic cube with only one hand. A handicap makes it impossible for him to sort the classic toy with two hands in color. He did not want to prolong his title today with a second place (16.56 seconds), but that makes the single-handed resolution of the cubes no less handsome.

2017/10/11 – Jeroen Dijsselbloem leaves Dutch House of Commons.

Jeroen Dijsselbloem

Deputy Minister of Finance Jeroen Dijsselbloem (Labour) puts down his parliamentary membership and leaves the Dutch politics. The Wageningen resident has announced his decision on Wednesday by letter to the President of the Dutch House of Commons, which has been placed on the website of his party, Labour. When the new cabinet is inaugurated in two weeks, Wageningen’s resident will say goodbye to Dutch politics.

According to the Volkskrant, which released the news Wednesday, it is missing the minister ‘firepower’. And that is urgent when the Labour group is opposed in the opposition and reduced to only nine members. Dijsselbloem has announced his departure on Tuesday evening by letter to Chamber President Arib. “The Labour Party, my party, needs further and needs nine guns. I have now come to the conclusion that in this role, at this stage, I do not have the power to fire. “

The member of Labour resigns as chairman of the Eurogroup (until mid-January). The euro area finance ministers voted earlier this week. There is nothing known about his future plans.

2017/10/11 – New government: Rutte III – Coalition of 4 parties with only 76 of the 150 seats in palement

These are the plans of Rutte III

After three months of negotiations, the ruling agreement Rutte III’s is ready. We put the most important and remarkable plans in a row:

  • The abolition period of the so-called Law Hillen is being extended. The term is now twenty years, but it will be thirty years. The parties hope to relieve the pain.
  • The mortgage interest rebate will be accelerated as of 2020 to 37 percent. This is especially true for people who are in the highest tax rate with their income (52%).
  • The rent allowance is reduced, in return for better affordable rental housing in the free sector.

Safety and justice

  • The budget is disconnected from fines. That’s the incentive for the police to hand out many fines. No deposit quota more.
  • There are experiments with neighbor judges, who, at a small amount, deal with simple business issues in neighboring ruins.
  • Detection services may purchase hack software. This is controversial because the police itself violates the law. The AIVD (Dutch secret service) will scan who provides the software. It may only be used in “some cases”.
  • Spreading revenge pornography is being punished separately.
  • Violence and perpetrators must immediately be obliged to attend their trial if they are in temporary custody.
  • Prohibition of motorbikes is continued.
  • There is a law to hold jihadists longer on return if evidence against them is not yet round.
  • No regional courts and local courts will be closed.
  • The penalty for hate sowing goes to two years.

  • The obligatory personal risk remains equal to 385 euros, but the health care premiums will increase.
  • EUR 2.1 billion is available to comply with the new standards for good nursing home care.
  • This cabinet period is available for prevention and health promotion 170 million euros, then 20 million per year. There is a national plan of action, focusing on combating smoking and overweight.
  • There will be a subscription fee of 17.50 euros per four weeks for households using municipal facilities.
  • The discussion about completed life is being put on the long run.

Green plans

  • Focus is on combating CO2 emissions. Purpose: reduction of 49 percent by 2030.
  • There will be a national climate and energy agreement for the long term.
  • In the near future, there will be more plots for wind energy at sea, a minimum price for CO2 for the energy sector and greening of the tax system.
  • The subsidization of biomass subsidies in coal plants will be stopped in 2024.
  • All coal plants must be closed by 2030. Furthermore, from 2021 new houses and buildings can not be heated with gas.
  • Municipalities like Utrecht and Rotterdam may have an environmental zone for polluting old cars, as long as the rules are nationally the same.

  • The Netherlands promotes more ‘Turkey deals’: Refugees are taken as much as possible outside of Europe.
  • There is an investigation into whether the refugee treaty needs to be revised.
  • The unit that war criminals trace in the asylum flow, gets more people.
  • The service deployed by asylum seekers is also increased to realize more expulsions.
  • There is no new general pardon upon illegally living children.
  • An illegal drug may remain in bed-bath-bread for two weeks. After that he has to cooperate on his departure.

  • The government is considering whether a charge can be charged on aircraft that produce too much noise or pollution.
  • Cabinet wants new agreements on the Paris treaty and charges for aviation.
  • EUR 2 billion will be released for asphalt, public transport and waterways. There will also be more money for bike paths.

  • 270 million euros will be released for salaries and 450 million for lower job pressure teachers for primary education.
  • EUR 170 million is earmarked for early and pre-school education.
  • EUR 15 million will be released for children with educational backing and highly gifted children.
  • There will be a social internship for young people of up to six months. This is not mandatory, but does, for example, take precedence over government sollications.
  • The loan system remains, but the tuition fees for first-year students are halved.
  • The so called “Cito”-test will no longer count towards a secondary school diploma.
  • The government wants students to do exams in several subjects at a higher level, also provide access to higher education continued.
  • The number of tests will be revised.
  • Children must learn the National Hymn at school.

Labor Market and Social Security

  • It is easier for employers to dismiss employees, the severance pay is rising.
  • Loans in case of illness are shortened by small businesses (up to 25 employees) from two to one year.
  • An employer may offer temporary contracts over a period of three years instead of two years. In between, a period of six months is maintained.
  • Payrolling is tied up. Employment conditions for temporary workers must be equal to those of employees.
  • There is a minimum hourly rate for zzp’ers of 15 to 18 euros.
  • When zzp’ers earn little (125 percent of the legal minimum wage) and work long for a client (three years), they are entitled to a fixed contract.
  • A commitment obligation is expected from assistants.
  • Parental leave will be extended by two to five days by 2019, as of July 1, 2020 parents will receive five weeks leave for a payment of 70 percent of the salary.
  • A new pension scheme will be introduced in 2020 with individual savings pots instead of the current system, which will be saved in a general pot from which everyone will receive his pension.

  • The Cabinet draws 40 million euros annually for the expansion of Dutch consulates and embassies.
  • There will be an institution Foreign Country where Dutch people can go abroad 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Future missions of Dutch soldiers will be longer in duration and greater in size.

  • The government doubles the additional contribution to top sport (from 10 to 20 million euros), to offer more opportunities to our Olympic and Paralympic teams.
  • There is more room for top sports talent to combine education and their sport.
  • Structural 5 million euros will be added extra for the organization of sports events in the Netherlands.
  • 10 million euros will be released for tackling doping, match fixation, corruption and abuse in sport.

  • The dividend tax is abolished.
  • The company tax decreases from 25 to 21 percent.
  • There is an additional tax on energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

2017/09/20 – Autumn starts delicious

Het wordt mooi weer voor een wandeling in de natuur.

Friday starts the astronomical autumn, but it is accompanied by lovely temperatures and a lot of sunshine. So keep that umbrella in the closet! A high-pressure area spreads over the Netherlands from tomorrow. From the southwest, the clouds break more and in the south the temperature can reach 20 degrees. It stays dry and there is little wind. The autumn is therefore not expected to be wet. Friday at 22.02, the sun is perpendicular to the equator and its “equally long” day and night: the beginning of the astronomical autumn. The sun is probably a bit hesitant on Friday, and in the west it’s even a bit of a fall in the afternoon, but on weekends the sun breaks well and it seems like a bit of ‘after summer’. Temperatures range from 18 to 19 degrees north to 21 degrees in the south. ,, Very pleasant so. And there is also little wind, ideal for a beautiful walk in nature, “said meteorologist Michiel Severin.

Even after the weekend fine

Rainfall in millimeters; from September 1 till 19.

After the weekend, it keeps calm. The wind is heading for an eastern direction and the chance of precipitation remains small. Occasionally cloudy fields cross over, but there is plenty of room for the sun. The maximum temperature fluctuates around 20 degrees. With the dry and calm weather there is an end to a very wet period. Especially in the west and north, the first twenty days of September were very wet. Local fell in North Holland over 200 millimeters. Also Friesland, South Holland and Zeeland were particularly wet, with 100 to 150 millimeters. In the north of Limbourg, the lowest precipitation has fallen so far. Normally in the Netherlands in the month of September from east to west 60 to 100 millimeters.

2017/09/12 – Dutch soldiers deployed against St Martin looting in wake of Hurricane Irma

Dutch troops were fanning out across part of the hurricane-hit island of St Martin on Friday as shots were heard and officials admitted there had been some looting. “The situation is serious,” Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said when asked about looting, adding authorities were being hampered in their efforts to deal with it as communications were cut off when Hurricane Irma roared through on Wednesday. Shots had been heard on the island, a top marine official revealed, but said it was unclear where they had come from. “Shots have been fired, but not in a structured fashion,” Major General Richard Oppelaar, the commander of the Marine Corps, told reporters in The Hague. “I can’t deny there are some weapons around,” he said, adding in some areas the situation remained “grim” and the atmosphere was tense. “The supermarkets are empty, so people are out searching,” Oppelaar said, adding in principle security was Koning Willem-Alexander bezoekt de Nederlandse luchtmacht op Curaçaounder control with soldiers trying “to be as visible” as possible. About 200 Dutch soldiers have now arrived on the island, which is divided between France and The Netherlands, to help deliver aid and restore order, he added. The badly damaged airport and port have now “been opened for military purposes,” Rutte told reporters, adding “we are doing everything possible to get aid to the area.” He said food, water and security were the priorities on the island, known in Dutch as Sint Maarten. “There are people on the streets armed with revolvers and machetes,” one witness told the Dutch daily newspaper AD on Friday.  “The situation is very serious. No one is in charge.” “We will not abandon Sint Maarten,” Rutte Koning Willem-Alexander krijgt een rondleiding op Princess Juliana International Airportvowed, adding officials were also sending medicines, tents, tarpaulins, building materials and hygiene kits as fast as possible to the Caribbean. “The military has two tasks after arriving there. Firstly to ensure that there is food and water, but also to ensure security,” Rutte said. Dutch officials have confirmed that two people were killed, and 43 wounded, 11 of them seriously, on the Dutch part of St Martin by the Category Five storm, before it was downgraded Friday to a four as it barrelled towards Cuba and Florida. King Willem-Alexander is to visit Curacao on Sunday from where the Dutch aid operation is being coordinated, and may then travel on to Sint Maarten. A fund launched by the Dutch Red Cross in the hours after the storm pummelled the island as already raised some 850,000 euros for the Dutch territory.

2017/09/09 – King and Minister Plasterk to visit Curaçao.

On Sunday His Majesty the King will be departing for a visit to Curaçao. He will be accompanied by Ronald Plasterk, Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. There they will be briefed on the aid being sent from Curaçao to St Maarten, Saba and St Eustatius. They will also look into the possibility of visiting the islands.

  1. The red colored numbers are student housings; the largest complex is Graafseweg 223 till 237, with in the garden a wing of studio’s, that runs from Graafseweg 225 to the opposite side: Hatertseveldweg 138. The owner of this complex is also the owner of Graafseweg 239.
  2. The blue colored numbers are companies. One of these buildings (354) might as well be converted into student housing; the plans are there; 18 rooms!!!
  3. The black colored numbers are the houses which people own and live in.
  • 13 buildings are private owned and used by their owners—–37%
  • 3 company buildings——————————————————-9%
  • 19 buildings are private owned but hired to students———-54%

When counting in people per housing, figures are completely different:

  • private housing: av. 3 people/house number====13 x 3=    39 (25%)
  • company buildings; av. 0 people/house number===3 x 0=    0     (0%)
  • student housing: av. 6 people/house number====19 x 6= 114 (75%)

That means: for every 1 private owning and living person in the “Nuisance Triangle” there are 3 tenants/students!!!

Nota bene: these figures are based on the official data from the Community Nijmegen, as far as they are accessable for “open” information.

The film is set in June 1905; the protagonists of the film are the members of the crew of the Potemkin, a battleship of the Imperial Russian Navy’s Black Sea Fleet. Eisenstein divided the plot into five acts, each with its own title:

Act I: Men and Maggots

The scene begins with two sailors, Matyushenko and Vakulinchuk, discussing the need for the crew of the Potemkin to support the revolution taking place within Russia. While the Potemkin is anchored off the island of Tendra, off-duty sailors are sleeping in their bunks. As an officer inspects the quarters, he stumbles and takes out his aggression on a sleeping sailor. The ruckus causes Vakulinchuk to awake, and he gives a speech to the men as they come to. Vakulinchuk says, “Comrades! The time has come when we too must speak out. Why wait? All of Russia has risen! Are we to be the last?” The scene cuts to morning above deck, where sailors are remarking on the poor quality of the meat for the crew. The meat appears to be rotten and covered in worms, and the sailors say that “even a dog wouldn’t eat this!” The ship’s doctor, Smirnov, is called over to inspect the meat by the captain. Rather than worms, the doctor says that the insects are maggots, and they can be washed off prior to cooking. The sailors further complain about the poor quality of the rations, but the doctor declares the meat edible and ends the discussion. Senior officer Giliarovsky forces the sailors still looking over the rotten meat to leave the area, and the cook begins to prepare borscht although he too questions the quality of the meat. The crew refuses to eat the borscht, instead choosing bread and water, and canned goods. While cleaning dishes, one of the sailors sees an inscription on a plate which reads “give us this day our daily bread.” After considering the meaning of this phrase, the sailor smashes the plate and the scene ends.

Act II: Drama on the Deck

All those who refuse the meat are judged guilty of insubordination and are brought to the fore-deck where they receive religious last rites. The sailors are obliged to kneel and a canvas cover is thrown over them as a firing squad marches onto the deck. The First Officer gives the order to fire, but in response to Vakulinchuk’s pleas the sailors in the firing squad lower their rifles and the uprising begins. The sailors overwhelm the outnumbered officers and take control of the ship. The officers are thrown overboard, the ship’s priest is dragged out of hiding, and finally the doctor is thrown into the ocean as ‘food for the fish’.

Act III: A Dead Man Calls for Justice

The mutiny is successful but Vakulinchuk, the charismatic leader of the rebels, is killed. The Potemkin arrives at the port of Odessa. Vakulinchuk’s body is taken ashore and displayed publicly by his companions in a tent with a sign on his chest that says “For a spoonful of soup” (Изъ-за ложки борща). The sailors gather to make a final farewell and praise Vakulinchuk as a hero. The people of Odessa welcome the sailors, but they attract the police.

Act IV: The Odessa Steps

The best-known sequence of the film is set on the Odessa steps, connecting the waterfront with the central city. A detachment of dismounted Cossacks forms a line at the top of the steps and march towards a crowd of unarmed civilians including women and children. The soldiers halt to fire a volley into the crowd and then continue their impersonal, machine-like advance. Brief sequences show individuals amongst the people fleeing or falling, a baby’s pram rolling down the steps, a woman shot in the face, broken spectacles and the high boots of the soldiers moving in unison.

In retaliation, the sailors of the Potemkin decide to fire on a military headquarters with the guns of the battleship. Meanwhile, there is news that a squadron of loyal warships is coming to quell the revolt of Potemkin.

Act V: One Against All

The sailors of the Potemkin decide to go all the way and lead the battleship from the port of Odessa to face the fleet of the Tsar. Just when the battle seems inevitable, the sailors of the formerly loyal ships incredibly refuse to open fire on their comrades, externalizing with songs and shouts of joy their solidarity with the mutineers and allowing them to pass unmolested through the fleet, waving the red flag.

Kaart Oeffelt

Oeffelt is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant, part of the Boxmeer municipality, about 5 km north of Boxmeer town and 6 km west of the border with the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Oeffelt was a separate municipality until 1994, when it became part of Boxmeer.

Inhabitants: 2,400

Surface: 9.48 sq Km

The settlement Oeffelt was first mentioned in a document in 1075 as Uflo. This could be a combination from the Celtic words uffa (water) and ten (settlement), indicating a settlement by the Meuse river, which nowadays runs between Oeffelt on the west bank and Gennep – in the province of Limburg – on the east bank. The villages are connected by a bridge in the N264 road.

In the days of 1940, the Germans laid a pontoon bridge towards the Ferry House for the delivery of their troops to Holland, Belgium and France. In the autumn of 1944 the German army blew up the Maasbridge. For this reason, the English Royal Engineers introduced a well-traveled Bailey bridge between February and March 1945 between Oeffelt and Gennep. A handsome technique where Churchill and Montgomery took their own body height.

In the beginning of the 20th century (January 11, 2011), and around 1984  villages like Oeffelt, Boxmeer and Gennep were flooded, when the dikes of the river Meuse had a gape of 150 meters.

Nimwegen pub tycoons revive Ferry House in Oeffelt.

The Ferry House in Oeffelt has been closed since September 2016, but will get bach its grandeur. According to Maarten Pillen and Arjen Gesterkamp from Nimwegen. The owners of the pubs Moenen and Camelot and the wine bar Pinot – all side by side on the Grote Markt in Nimwegen – bought the Oeffelt Ferry House on the river Meuse in June 2017 for about €600,000 / £555,000 to give it a new and an ambitious life.

Holiday apartments

March 2018, the duo wants to reopen the doors of the Oeffelt Ferry House. Not only is the restaurant transformed into a café. “Of the seven hotel rooms, we want to make four independent holiday apartments. Without breakfast option, because in the Ferry House we want to have lunch and dinner. We will solve that with a small kitchen, and people may also go elsewhere in the region.” The Ferry House is intended to be open for the public seven days a week. With three pubs on the bustling Grote Markt in Nimwegen, the change to the outside area is great. “At first, we did not say a lot when people asked if something else was not something for us,” says Gesterkamp. “I’ve always called that I do not want to go back and forth by business, but that’s going to happen.” The pub tycoons were still looking for something new and coincided at the Ferry House. They immediately felt good at the white monumental building on the Oeffelt banks of the river Meuse.

Also the ferry will be put to life again!

It is a challenge. “A matter in the outlying area is something very different from the center of the city. Every place has its own peculiarities, and here is the challenge to make it attractive to sit in the winter months. The view is beautiful and you have peace and space, but it must be cozy enough to pull people to this terrace and to have the cafe survive in the winter,” says Pillen. In order to achieve that, according to Gesterkamp, it must in all cases be restored. “We want to retrieve the characteristic styles of this property and, of course, refurbish the exterior. But maybe we want to open the veranda again. In recent years, they have been closed by glass walls, “said Gesterkamp. Not only the property, but also the feelings and memories that residents of the region had at the place should be lived up to the new builders. “This must be a place for everyone and we want to give people the place they ever loved so much,” says Gesterkamp. The village also appears to have a need: regularly there are passengers to express their enthusiasm.

Currently there is an exhibition at the Hermitage museum in Amsterdam, called “1917 Romanovs & Revolution – the end of a monarchy”.  I have taken about fifty pictures and recorded 3 movies. All in one presented in this video:

2017/07/24 – Kinderdijk – Windmills

We are going to the Eiffel Tower, Niagara Falls and the Chinese Wall. Kinderdijk, a topper in our own country, good for millions of guests from Asia and America, the Dutch ignore. Unfairly.. The sails of the mill turn on the speed of the wind. They are slow, powerful successes. One two three four. One two three four. They hit holes in the heavy air, which hangs low over Kinderdijk and makes a Dutch masterpiece of the landscape: nineteen mills in a thunderstorm.

Unesco World Heritage. A spot on the map of the Netherlands where it’s never today, but always yesterday. Between 1738 and 1740, besides the existing polder mills, seventeen new reservoir mills were built, which together had to keep the Alblasserwaard dry. And they did. Except one all the windmills are still there. A little wonder. Although a modern pumping engines can move the contents of an Olympic pool from the polder to the river – per minute! – are all old mills still ready to take over! For emergencies, because in a country below sea level you can not be careful enough. By bus at the same time, foreign tourists come to Kinderdijk to see the real Netherlands from then on. Almost all they do wrong. Arrival, get out, quickly go to the mills, take pictures, post an instagram and there they go again. But if you want to understand something from Kinderdijk, you will have to do that at the pace of the past. A visit to the Museum mill helps. Kitchen, living room, kettle, beddings and old black and white photos will take you to a time when the millers send each other messages through the sails. Merry and nasty messages, like the day when miller wife Alie Hoek wanted to save her baby, but was caught by the sails herself. Miller Hoek remained with sadness and thirteen children.

Most beautiful place
Most tour operators do not go beyond the Museum mill. While slightly further away, at the also accessible Blokker Wip mill, is the most beautiful place in Kinderdijk. Behind the mill and the house where coffee and tea are poured, beans are on the water. Here you feel the heart rate of a polder below sea level. Quiet, courageous, determined. On the ditch side the reed winds in the wind, a water bird dives and geese fly low to land on the meadow on the other side. Hell yes. The history of Kinderdijk is fascinating, the movie about the former pumping engine Wisboom interesting, and the Museum mill are sure to visit, but nothing is bigger than a bench on the water with a view of the mills, lots of mills.

2017/07/24 – Inhabitants of Nijmegen: beware!!! The Graafseweg is a pit during the holiday.

Graafseweg werk

Do you often drive by car over the Graafseweg? Do not do it anymore. From Wednesday 26 July to Sunday 3 September, this road will be a pit. The road is closed between the Arend Noorduijnstraat and the Rozenstraat and the crossing with the Willemsweg for car traffic. Cyclists and pedestrians are allowed to go. Do you live in this section? For road traffic, the road is still accessible to the Burghardt van den Berghstraat / Arend Noorduijnstraat and to the Rozenstraat. In the last week of August the road will be asphalted and the alignment will be applied. Then the Graafseweg is closed from the Emperor Charles Square to the Rozenstraat.

Work on bike paths and viaducts.
The holiday period is used to carry out maintenance work on the two railway viaducts where the Graafseweg passes. At the same time, the municipality carries out roadworks so that traffic is only one time. In the coming weeks, the road surface on the viaducts will be replaced and the cycle paths will be asphalted and widened. At the height of Dobbelman, the cycle path is shifted. The bike path is at the same height as the cars. The current steep exit will only be used by pedestrians.

Graafseweg: from two to one lane.
For traffic going out of the city, the number of lanes on the rail viaduct is back from two to a lane. On the part between Emperor Charles Square and Arend Noorduijnstraat, two lanes remain so that the traffic has enough space to insert. In addition, the intersections with the Arend Noorduijnstraat / Burghardt van den Berghstraat and the crossroads with the Willemsweg are changing. There are also new traffic lights with waiting time forecasters.

2017/07/08 – Dutch mourning for Tijn Kolsteren

Terminally ill six-year-old raises two million euros for charity with nail-painting challenge

in memoriam Tijn Kolsteren: b. July 14, 2010 – d. July 7, 2017

terminally ill six-year-old has raised more than 2.5 million Euros (£2.1m) for charity by daring people in the Netherlands to paint their nails. Tijn Kolsteren, who was diagnosed with brain cancer in May, hoped to raise a few hundred Euros for other unwell children with the challenge. But the appeal, which ran for three days and ended on Saturday, caught the public imagination. Tijn, who has been told he is unlikely to live for more than a year, said as part of his bucket list he wants to help as many other children as possible. He appeared on a Dutch radio programme with his father, Gerrit Kolsteren, and asked people to get their nails painted and give money to his donation page. “With his nail-painting dare he wanted to help children suffering from pneumonia,” the Dutch public broadcaster NOS reported. “It was an enormous success – from DJ Armin van Buuren to prime minister Mark Rutte, and many other famous celebrities had their nails painted [sic].” The donation page urged people: “Paint your nails, make a donation and then challenge three of your friends to do the same.” It invited participants to share their pictures on social media using the hashtag  #lakaan (meaning “the polish is on”). By Thursday, #lakaan and #heelhollandlakt (all of Holland paints) were trending on Twitter. 3FM’s Serious Request is a radio programme which raises money for different causes every year. It’s currently in its 12th year and is raising money for the Red Cross’s fight against pneumonia. During the appeal, two DJs live in a ‘glass house’ for six days with no food. Mr Rutte joined the DJs late on Friday and opted for a deep blue for his own nails. Other people lined up outside the studio to ask Tijn to paint their nails personally. Tijn’s family learned last week that a course of chemotherapy had failed to reduce the size of his cancer. “Despite this bad news, we wanted to do something for children who won’t maybe even make it to six,” Mr Kolsteren told NOS. “We came up with the idea together: Tijn had already painted his nails with a friend and liked it. I wanted to do something similar to the ice bucket challenge and men painting their nails is a bit taboo,” he added, referring to the internet craze that raised money and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The Dutch media has hailed the boy as a hero, with the tabloid newspaper AD putting a picture of him dressed as a superhero under the headline “SuperTijn” on the front of its Friday edition.

Dutch mourn death of ‘nail varnish dare’ boy who raised millions for charity

Image result for death TIJN KOLSTEREN

Tijn Kolsteren, a terminally ill Dutch boy who raised millions of euros in a charity drive by daring people to paint their nails – including the country’s top politicians – has died, his foundation announced on Friday (July 7). “We are confused and devastated,” the Semmy Foundation, the charity organisation supported by six-year-old Tjin, announced on its Facebook page. It said he died on the final day of a new fund-raising drive, without specifying when. Diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer in May last year, Tijn fired the public’s imagination when he launched a move to dare people to paint their nails, hoping to raise a few hundred euros.  “Paint your nails, make a donation and then challenge three of your friends to do the same,” his donation page said at the time. Within a few days, his action netted more than 2.5 million euros (S$3.9 million), with numerous public figures including Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and DJ Armin van Buuren donning nail polish in support. In total, more than nine million euros were collected and the Dutch press hailed the brave youngster as a superhero. Soon he became known as “SuperTijn”. Pope Francis in April blessed him in a letter sent from the Vatican City after he was told about the nail polish initiative. Before his death, Tijn was working on a new charity drive called “Lak door Tijn” (Dutch for “Nail polish by Tijn”) in which he sold four colours of polish to collect money to buy a specialised machine to treat children with brain cancer. The goal amount of one million euros was reached on Thursday night, Dutch media reported. His family was flooded with condolences and the hashtag #tijn became the top trending topic on Twitter in The Netherlands, even uniting opposing Dutch politicians in their grief. “Rest softly, young brave hero,” far-right politician Geert Wilders tweeted, with a picture of him sporting bright red nails during the original charity drive. “Thank you for your inspiration, little big man,” tweeted Mr Jesse Klaver, leader of the leftist Green Party (GL). Mr Rutte praised him for inspiring people. “Tijn is an example for many,” he said before the boy’s death.

2017/07/07 – Tijn Kolsteren (6) of nail polish action Serious Request deceased

December 24, 2016 – The deadly ill 6 year old boy Tijn has evolved into the hero of 3FM action Serious Request in recent days. With his nail polish action he handed over more than 2.5 million euros. Tijn’s own favorite color is pink and he has not yet painted toenails, only fingers. “But what’s not, can still come,” says his father Gerrit Kolsteren. “The most beautiful thing I think is that Tijn wants to paint everyone after the nails. It’s such a social boy.” Gerrit is very proud on his son and is very committed to him. Tijn suffers from terminal cerebrovascular cancer (DIPG), a rare disease that is diagnosed annually in the Netherlands by fifteen to twenty children. The six-year-old boy will probably live for a maximum of one year and decided with his parents to use the collective action of Serious Request from NPO 3FM from Breda. Who donated money could make his or her nails paint by Tijn or others under the motto PolishThrough. “The idea of lacquering nails, Tijn actually had half a year,” says his father. “With his girlfriend Sanne, he often plays with a makeup box and usually comes with colored nails at home.” Gerrit says that Tijn and the rest of the family are not fully aware of the big impact, even internationally. And on the question of whether they have slept a little over the past few days, he answers: “One day less than the other.” On social media, the action was quickly renamed the whole of Holland Polishes. The modest target amount was 100 euros. But by all the media attention and enthusiasm of the public, the counter was already nearly 2.5 million euros on Saturday night.”In this way, we can give the difficult period of time a positive vibe. Tijn has 100 percent realizing he will not get any better,” Gerrit said. “He asked the doctors if he would grow up. And when he was told that it would not happen, he fell off from the age of sixteen. Tijn knows what to happen.” Serious Request revenue is used this time to prevent child mortality from pneumonia. Every year around 900,000 children die throughout the world. In the wake of the 3FM action, the Semmy and Dream or Donate Foundation also receive a lot of attention and gifts. Semmy plans to give children with cerebral cancer a better prognosis. Dream or Donate is an international platform for online crowdfunding. But Gerrit is primarily focused on the purpose of the action of NPO 3FM. “We are now focusing on money for the fight against pneumonia and put the rest in the proverbial refrigerator.” He still has to think about how he can continue to ask for attention to Tijn’s disease. “For the time being, thanks to the glass house, enjoy, enjoy, enjoy Tijn.” December 24, 2016 – The Red Cross is  very pleased with the proceeds of Serious Request 2016. The unique action still proves united in the Netherlands, represents the organi-zation – partly thanks to the six-year Tijn and his nail polish action. “Yes, we can save many children’s lives here,” spokesman Merlin Stoffels said after closing the final amount of Serious Request 2016 on Saturday night. With the 8.74 million euros, children in Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia and Sudan are being threatened to die from pneumonia. The money can be bought from antibiotic packages, as well as ambulances for transporting sick children to the hospital. Critics suggested that Serious Request after twelve years and the run of 3FM DJs were over its peak. The Red Cross believes that the past week proved that the action is still alive. “In particular, Tijn’s nail polish action showed that everyone supports this action,” says Stoffels. “From left to right, the whole society scolded its call for lacquering nails. Everyone sees the need to ask for attention and raise money for this kind of silent disaster.” The spokeswoman does not think that the action without Tijn press had delivered less money. “What he has done is amazing, that’s out of order,” said Stoffels. “Who had said a week ago that Mark Rutte and Geert Wilders had lacquered their nails had been fooled.” But often people have already agreed to support Serious Request with a financial contribution. “It’s quite unique, how Tijn caused a wave of togetherness.” His very sad story brought the suffering of many African families, who are confronted with children who die at a very early age, suddenly very close.”The concept of the ‘silent disaster’ will never tear the Red Cross, says Stoffels. “For example, some people suggested that we should collect money for Aleppo this year,” he mentions as an example. “But for that kind of horrible disaster that goes on television every day, people usually give money. We want to pay attention to Serious Request with disasters that do not come true for the camera’s eyes.” January 22, 2017 – The health of Tijn Kolsteren, who raised $ 2.5 million during Serious Request with his nail polish action, is reversing. The six-year-old’s parents have told NPO 3FM that they have a difficult time. “It was very painful for us to see that Tijn’s health visibly deteriorated during Christ-mas, so Tijn had to undergo irradiation immediately after Christmas,” wrote his parents Gerrit and Jolanda. The family is “very grateful” that they have been able to alternate the difficult period “with fun and special outings made possible for us.” For example, the family went to Disneyland Paris and spent Sunday visiting the PSV match against Heerenveen. Tijn has trouble walking. “A wheelchair for long distances has become unavoidable.” Tijn suffers from terminal cerebrovascular cancer (DIPG), a rare disease that is diagnosed annually in the Netherlands by fifteen to twenty children. Last month, he became the epitome of Serious Request with his action, PolishThrough, calling on everyone to paint their nails and donate money for charity. April 05, 2017 – Tijn Kolsteren, the incurably sick boy who raised 2.6 million euros with his nail polish action during Serious Request at 3FM, received a great award from the Red Cross on Wednesday, the Cross of Merit. Tijn Kolsteren received the award from Red Cross director Gijs de Vries in the 3FM studio. The then six-year-old Kolsteren, who suffers from terminal brain cancer, made a deep impression of his action. “With the money collected, not only can many children be helped, his action has brought the Netherlands closer together,” said De Vries. He calls that “a hopeful story”. Serious Request raised money for the fight against pneumonia in children at the end of last year. The Red Cross is awarded the Cross of Merit with high exceptions if there are “significant merits within or towards the Red Cross”. After 3FM Serious Request, Tijn did not work well. He got serious walking problems, requiring a wheelchair for long distances. But now it seems better to go again. Father Gerrit says: “It’s pretty good with Tijn. Last week we went on vacation for a week and then the doctor called the last MRI to look better than January. The tumor has become a little smaller and the chemo seems to grow To brake. ” April 18, 2017 – Pope Franciscus pronounced apostolic blessing on the severely ill Tijn Kolsteren from Hapert. In December, the boy earned over 2.5 million euros with his nail polish action for Serious Request. The Pope also sent a breast cross and a picture of himself. Kolsteren suffers from cerebral cancer and is incurably ill. The Nijmegen pastor Johan Flapper managed to contact the pope, according to Broadcast Brabant. “That he committed himself to other sick children so that they could grow older than him, grabbed me,” said Flapper. “I saw in his actions that of the Christmas child of Bethlehem,” he says. “Therefore I wrote a letter to the Pope.” A Vatican City has now received a letter on behalf of the Pope. “His Holiness guides the little Tijn with prayer and confides in Mary’s advocacy, the consolation of the impromptu. The Holy Father grants the little Tijn and his family, His apostolic blessing.” The letter and the photo are still at Flapper. He wants to get the mail as soon as possible with Tijn, but “I have not managed to get in touch with the family.” May 31, 2017 – Wendy van Dijk and Youp van ‘t Hek, together, start an action to raise money for brain cancer research. The two are the face of a new action around Tijn Kolsteren, the incurable sick boy who received the nail polish in the Netherlands last December during Serious Request at 3FM. He suffers from cerebral cancer. The action of Tijn stirred Van ‘t Hek. After writing a column about it, he was asked to pass by Tijn’s oncologist at the VUmc. “He guided me through his lab, told how much money is needed for new research,” the cabareteer told the AD.”He said,” I’m not asking you now. “But when I was cycling home, I thought, I gotta do something about it, and then Wendy came across.” The presenter has been an ambassador for Stichting Semmy, an organization that also collects money for brain cancer. Van Dijk and Van ‘t Hek continued to argue over a cabaret column in January, which made him hard at Van Dijks man and RTL program director Erland Galjaard. “This kind of disagreement is, of course, totally unimportant,” says Van ‘t Hek. “I even got a little lazy when I heard that Wendy was the ambassador of the foundation. Of course, we will probably never agree on a few things, but they are really a matter of fact.” “Hopefully, we will attract more attention to the action,” adds Van Dijk. “That can only benefit the proceeds.” Via the website are pots of nail polish available for sale in four colors selected by Tijn. The proceeds fully benefit from the VUmc research. The target amount is one million euros. This allows a special robot to be purchased that allows brain stem tumors to be treatable. June 27, 2017 – The nail polish action of Youp van ‘t Hek and Wendy van Dijk for the sick Tijn Kolsteren has a temporary shop in Utrecht since Tuesday. In the central station of Utrecht, the various nail polish pots are available this week. Van ‘t Hek and Van Dijk joined hands to raise money for children with cerebral cancer. They do this by selling pots of nail polish from the severely ill Tijn Kolsteren, renowned for his nail polish action for Serious Request in December. The action #lakdoor has now collected almost 750,000 euros. The target amount is 1 million euros, intended for the purchase of a robot to treat children with cerebral cancer. July 06, 2017 – The nail polish paint by Tijn has already delivered a million euros. On Thursday afternoon the counter went over the 1 million euro. That was also the target amount. The money goes to Stichting Semmy, who wants to buy a device for treatment of cerebral cervical cancer so far. With this “robot”, the medicine is better placed in the right place. Tijn is one of the children in the Netherlands with brain cancer, a rare disease that affects fifteen to twenty children every year in the Netherlands. He will not get any better. The boy reported himself as one of the many in December at the Glass House to collect money with his nail polish action and stole everyone’s hearts in the shortest time. His action alone yielded 2.5 million euros for Serious Request. NPO Radio 3FM, which organizes Serious Request every year, received the congratulations of Prime Minister Mark Rutte on Thursday. “After the fantastic action in Breda, which has also turned a lot around Tijn, you’ve managed to get this together too. Really fantastic,” said the Prime Minister. “Tijn is such an example for a lot of people. How to get rid of so much energy in so many people, I find that very special.” This spring, Youp van ‘t Hek and Wendy van Dijk came up with a continuation of Tijn’s action. They sell pots of nail polish, in colors that Tijn has chosen. NPO 3FM was the sign of the action throughout the Thursday.

July 07, 2017 – Tijn Kolsteren, known for his nail polish action for Serious Request, died during the night of Thursday on Friday at the age of 6. The boy suffered from cerebral cervical cancer. That states 3FM Friday in a response to the website. The 6-year-old Tijn became “the hero” of the radio station at the end of 2016 when he went to the glass house and offered there from anyone who donated money to paint the nails. Several well-known Dutch and politicians joined the action of Tijn by lacquering their nails and donating money. Tijn suffered from terminal brain stem cancer (DIPG), a rare disease that is diagnosed annually in the Netherlands by fifteen to twenty children. At the end of May there was a new action with Tijn: The boy got his own nail lacquer ‘Lak door Tijn’, collecting money for the purchase of a device that has so far treated to severely ill children with cerebral cancer. Thursday evening, the target amount of 1 million euros was reached. Friday at the formal end of the action, more than 1.1 million euros were collected. According to a spokeswoman, the action continues until the last pot of nail polish is sold. Prime Minister Mark Rutte called Tijn Thursday evening, following the announcement of the achievement of the Image result for TIJN KOLSTERENtarget amount, an example for many people. “After the fantastic action in Breda, which has also turned a lot around Tijn, you’ve managed to get this together too. Really fantastic,” said the Prime Minister. “Tijn is such an example for a lot of people. How to get rid of so much energy in so many people, I find that very special.” Blessing – Pope Franciscus blessed Tijn in April 2017. “That he committed himself to other sick children so that they could grow older than he took me,” said Johan Flapper, Nijmegen’s pastor, at Omroep Brabant. “I saw in his actions that of the Christmas child of Bethlehem,” he says. “Therefore I wrote a letter to the Pope.” From Vatican City a letter was sent to Tijn and his parents. “His Holiness guides the little Tijn with prayer and confides in Mary’s advocacy, the consolation of the impromptu. The Holy Father grants the little Tijn and his family, His apostolic blessing.” Planetoid – In addition, a planetary tune was named by Tijn by the Minor Planet Center in the United States. Of these rocky blocks in a job around the sun there are hundreds of thousands. Previously, planetoids were named after Harry Mulisch, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Anne Frank, Erasmus, Wubbo Ockels, André Kuipers and Johan Cruijff. The Red Cross, which Serious Request co-organized, honored the boy from Hapert with a high distinction: the Cross of Merit. The relief organization accepts this distinction in exceptional cases if there are “important services within or towards the Red Cross.”

2017/07/06 – Twan Baas

  • Eric Baas (b. March 16, 1956) -Twan’s grandfather-  comes to Nijmegen for the Walk of the World marches (Vierdaagse) since 2006 and seeks shelter at our home. Eric is a fervent caregiver associated with several soccer teams as VV. Bennekom. As the WotW edition 2006 ended after the first day (temperatures >30C, 2 deaths), the counts for Eric (marching 50K per day, 4 days in a row) started in 2007. Last year he walked for the 10th time the WotW, in the 100th edition of the WotW. Nowadays Eric walks the 40K per day, preferably with an early start (distances per day for men, compulsary: 12y-15y: 30K, 16y-18y: 40K, 19y-49y: 50K, 50y-59y: 40K, 60y and older: 30K). Eric is a former marine. From his first marriage Eric has a son and a daughter.
  • Rutger Baas (b. October 4th, 1982) -the father of Twan- made also his career in the marine corps. He is a very sportive man, who rowed e.g. last year accross the North Sea to England, to raise funds for the Twan Foundtion. He joined his father several times in the WotW, and as a marine the compulsary 50K per day was easy for him 🙂 . Since the difficulties with Twan, Rutger does not walk anymore the WotW. But, he sometimes shows up. along the parcours… At the moment he works for the Defense department, and is specialised in escorting severe criminals, but is also charged escorting politicians and diplomats. Rutger is a member of the board of Twan Foundation; his wife Rianne is the president.
  • Foto-TwanTwan Baas (b. Sep-tember 2010) is the third generation in line. He suffers from the rare disease A-T (Ataxia Telangiectasia) -in the Netherlands about only 15 cases-. But he is a very lively, cheerful boy although he is very limited in action, because he gets tired very fast. You can read more about Twan and the A-T disease here. He is treated by Professor Doctor Michèl Willemsen, Child neuro-logist.
  • Prof. Dr. Michèl Willemsen, Child Neuro-logist, Management Expertise Center REEB – Children @ UMCN Radboud, Nijmegen, The Netherlands. Michèl Willemsen specializes in the treatment and guidance of children with neurometabolic and neurodegenerative diseases and of hq720children with movement disorders. He has specific expertise in ataxia teleangiectasia, GLUT1 deficiency syndrome, Sjögren-Larsson syndro-me and neurotransmitter diseases. Michèl Willem-sen studied medicine at the Radboud University Nijmegen from 1986 to 1990; In 1993 he obtained an art exam at UMC St Radboud. He then worked for a year as AGNIO for pediatrics, and from 1994 to 1999 he studied the pediatric and pediatric neurologist. In early 2000, Willemsen was registered as a pediatrician and a child neurologist. In 2001, Willemsen at Radboud University (cum laude) researched the Sjögren-Larsson Syndrome, a hereditary metabolic disease involving the brain, eyes and skin. His research activities have always focused on hereditary brain diseases (especially metabolic diseases), and movement disorders in that context. In 2006, Dr. Willemsen was appointed Head of Department of Child Neurology. Since 2008, Willemsen is a staff member of the Department of Neurology in UMC St Radboud and Head of Child Neurology. He is a member of the daily board of the Dutch Nursing for Child Neurology (NVKN) and the European Pediatric Neurology Society (EPNS).

Who is Twan?

img_1250Twan is the reason for the creation of the Twan Foundation. Twan is the son of Rutger Baas and Rianne Kranendonk (founders Twan Foundation). Via the link  you will get a picture of Twan and his parents. Twan was born in September 2010 and is a happy male. Until recently, Twan went 3 days a week for therapy to Rehabilitation Center Groot Klimmendaal in Arnhem. Twan, however, goes to school from August 2014; This is a school in Arnhem for children with physical disabilities. At this school, Twan also receives therapy. Therapy is aimed at maintaining the functions that are now there. Under the supervision of a rehabilitation physician, Twan receives physical therapy, speech therapy and ergotherapy. Twan currently has a child rollator with wich he walks along and has a wheelchair for longer distances. He can walk himself, but he has a lot of effort to stay alive and to walk straight, it seems like he’s drunk. Sometimes it may happen that he is sinking through his legs. Walking is often too tiring. Furthermore, Twan receives a low dose of antibiotics daily. This is to prevent him from becoming ill. Twan’s immune system operates less well than normal. As a result, he is more vulnerable than other children. Before the diagnosis was made, Twan was very ill at times. Because of the antibiotics he is almost no longer sick. Twan can therefore enjoy the “child” much more and everything that belongs to. Since September 2016 Twan gets an infusion of ‘gammaglobulin’ every three weeks, taking off his white blood cells, making him less effective against infections, etc. This infusion was given to the hospital for the first time, but nowadays Sanquin’s nurse will be at Twan home Infusion so that he can stay in his trusted and safe environment. Twan is very tired tired. Activities must be divided throughout the day and alternated with rest periods. Fortunately, Twan is starting to learn this now, which means he can get everything out of his way! Twan goes to a special ‘poli day’ at the St. Radboud Hospital in Nijmegen twice a year. There is a professor (for Twan doctor Michél) who specializes in, among other things, this rare disease.

T3WAtaxia-telangiectasia (A-T) is an autosomal recessive, complex, multisystem disorder characterized by progressive neurologic impairment, cerebellar ataxia, variable immunodeficiency with susceptibility to sinopulmonary infections, impaired organ maturation, x-ray hypersensitivity, ocular and cutaneous telangiectasia (see image below), and a predisposition to malignancy. The disease is hetero-geneous, both clinically and genetically, as shown by the existence of 4 complementation groups (A, C, D, E). The responsible gene (ATM gene) has been mapped to band 11q22-23.  The clinical and immunological presentation of ataxia-telangiectasia may differ even within the same family, as described by Soresina et al.  Syllaba and Henner first published descriptions of patients with ataxia-telangiectasia in 1926.  They observed progressive choreo-athetosis and ocular telangiectasia in 3 members of a single family. A gap of some 15 years occurred before the next report in 1941 by Louis-Bar, who described progressive cerebellar ataxia and cutaneous telangiectasia in a Belgian child.  The syndrome subsequently received the name of Louis-Bar. Ataxia-telangiectasia was not described as a distinct clinical entity for another 16 years until Boder and Sedgwick[in 1957 and Biemond  in 1957, with the aid of autopsies, reported organ developmental abnormalities; neurologic manifestations; and a third major feature of the disease, recurrent sinopulmonary infection. Ataxia-telangiectasia can best be classified, according to its major clinical and pathologic features, as a predominantly cerebellar form of spinocerebellar degeneration, which is transmitted as an autosomal recessive trait and evolves ultimately to include motor neuron disease, with spinal muscular atrophy and peripheral neuropathy. Ataxia-telangiectasia can also be classified among the neurocutaneous syndromes, although not among the phakomatoses as originally proposed, because the vascular and cutaneous lesions of ataxia-telangiectasia are not congenital nevi but develop in the course of the disease as a progeric manifestation. Ataxia-telangiectasia should be considered among the immunodeficiency diseases, cancer-prone genetic disorders, chromosomal instability syndromes, disorders with abnormal radiosensitivity, syndromes with possible DNA-repair/processing defects, and (as is now evident) the progeroid syndromes. Elevated immunoglobulin M (IgM) occurs in only 60% of patients, challenging this finding as a probable diagnosis criterion.

T2WThe ATM gene encodes the protein kinase ATM, which is the key regulator of cellular response to double-strand breaks (DSB) in DNA. Therefore, ataxia-telangiectasia symptoms include all the possible consequences of the perturbations in DNA damage response (DDR). One basic defect associated with the malady is the abnormal sensitivity of ataxia-telangiectasia cells to x-rays and certain radiomimetic chemicals but not to ultraviolet irradiation, which leads to chromosome and chromatid breaks. Breakpoints are randomly distributed, but nonrandom chromosome rearran-gements selectively affect chromo-somes 7 and 14 at sites that are concerned with T-cell receptors and heavy-chain immunoglobulin coding and with the development of hematologic malignancies. Such disturbances could account for the frequency of infections and neoplasias. As has been shown by Guerra-Maranhao et al, ataxia-telangiectasia patients are at high risk of having impaired responses to infection with pneumococci, which may be one of the causes of recurrent sinopulmonary infections in these patients.  The authors analyzed the production of antibodies to polysaccharide antigens in patients with ataxia-telangiectasia and found that the levels of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies to serotypes 1, 3, 5, 6B, 9V, and 14 of Streptococcus pneumoniaebefore and after immunization with 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine were significantly lower than in a healthy population. ATM gene targets include well-known tumor suppressor genes such as TP53 and BRCA1, both of which play an important role in the predisposition to breast cancer. Studies of ataxia-telangiectasia families have consistently reported an increased risk of breast cancer in women with one mutated ATM gene,  but, to date, an increased frequency of ATM mutations has not been found in women with breast cancer. ATM mutations are poor prognostic factor in patients with lung cancer.  The mechanisms responsible for neurologic disease, thymus aplasia, telangiectasias, growth retardation, and impaired organ mutation have not been elucidated, but most likely, they are linked to accelerated telomere loss.  ATMhas been shown to be pivotal for neurodevelopment, especially for stem cell differentiation, as well as for elimination of damaged postmitotic cells.  Frappart and McKinnon showed that the ATM protein has a proapoptotic function in the developing mouse CNS, acting in cooperation with another key proapoptotic factor—Bax protein.  ATM-dependent apoptosis occurred only in postmitotic populations of neurons after irradiation. These results suggest that ATM may serve to eliminate neurons with excessive DNA damage during CNS development. A general disturbance in tissue differentiation accounts for the almost constant elevation of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), a fetal serum protein of hepatic origin that indicates dedifferentiation of liver cells. Research suggests that ataxia-telangiectasia may be associated with dysregulation of the immunoglobulin gene superfamily, which includes genes for T-cell receptors. The normal switch from the production of immunoglobulin M (IgM) to IgG, immunoglobulin A (IgA), and immunoglobulin E (IgE) is defec-tive, and the same may apply to the switch from immature T cells that express the gamma/delta rather than the alpha/beta receptors. Conceivably, an absence or a mutation of a single protein coded for by chromosome 11 could explain the immunologic and perhaps even the neurologic features of the disease. The ATM protein apparently controls the cell cycle and plays a major role in the protection of the genome. The ATM gene product has been shown to be required for cell survival and genomic stability maintenance following exposure to low labile iron concentrations. Because iron chelation agents increase ataxia-telangiectasia cell genomic stability and viability and activate ATM-dependent cellular events in normal cells, Edwin Shackelford et al suggested that pharmacological manipulation of ATM activity via iron chelation might have clinical efficacy in Parkinson disease treat-ment.  Targeted next-generation sequencing is a rapid cost-effective method that identified five disease-causing variants in three Chinese probands in one study.

Ataxia-telangiectasia is reported in all regions of the world. The probable incidence of ataxia-telangiectasia is about 1 case in 100,000 births.  The frequency of ataxia-telangiectasia mutant allele heterozygosity was reported to be 1.4-2% of the general population.  The incidence of ataxia-telangiectasia was significantly higher in the highly consanguineous Bedouin population than in the relatively nonconsanguineous Jewish population of southern Israel.

Ataxia-telangiectasia is reported in all races, although the mortality ratios differ between the ethnic groups.

Ataxia-telangiectasia occurs equally among males and females.

No characteristic features are detectable during very early childhood. Ataxia is usually a first diagnostic hallmark, having its onset in the first years of life. Beyond the age of 5 years, the progression of the ataxia becomes increasingly apparent and the child requires a wheelchair by age 10 or 11 years. Trimis et al reported a 6-year-old girl without any neurological symptoms. Oculocutaneous telangiectasia, the second diagnostic hallmark of ataxia-telangiectasia, usually has a later onset than the ataxia, typically at age 3-6 years. The progression of the disease is apparent in subsequent years.

T1WThe neurologic features of ataxia-telangiectasia are relentlessly progressive. In addition to the classic early features, older patients tend to develop other signs of spinocerebellar degeneration (eg, posterior cord involvement with loss of the deep tendon reflexes, spinal muscular atrophy). Most patients are wheelchair dependent by age 10-15 years, but mild forms are not rare. Gene therapy holds promise for the future.  A 20-month-old girl with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia and ataxia-telangiectasia was apparently cured after only 7 weeks of antileukemic therapy, as she was reported in remission for 8 years.  Death typically occurs in early or middle adolescence, usually from bronchopulmonary infection, less frequently from malignancy, or from a combination of both. The median age at death is reported to be approximately 20 years.  To date, the longest reported survival is 34 years.  In a retrospective study in the United States, mortality from all causes in ataxia-telangiectasia was 50- and 147-fold higher for white and black patients with ataxia-telangiectasia, respectively, than expected based on overall US mortality rates.  Boder reviewed 58 complete autopsy cases; 27 (46%) deaths were caused by pulmonary infection alone, 12 (21%) by malignancy alone, 16 (28%) by a combination of both, and 3 (5%) by other reasons.  The lifetime risk of cancer among patients with ataxia-telangiectasia has been estimated to be 10-38%, which is about 100-fold more than the population rate; however, in the absence of chronic bronchopulmonary disease and lymphoreticular malignancy, ataxia-telangiectasia is consistent with survival into the fifth or sixth decade. Ataxia-telangiectasia heterozygotes present an excess risk of death (they die 7-8 y earlier than the normal population), mostly from ischemic heart disease (ataxia-telangiectasia carriers die 11 y younger than noncarriers) or cancer (ataxia-telangiectasia carriers die 4 y younger than noncarriers).

Patient Education

Good patient and parental education should include tactful genetic counseling and an explanation of the multisystem nature of the disease. Pay special attention to the susceptibility of adult members of families with ataxia-telangiectasia to malignant neoplasms and to the importance of regular examinations for early cancer detection.

We can not do without your support!

We can use your support very well … With your support, we mean: your ideas and initiatives, your time, but also your financial contribution. Do you have an idea or an initiative? And are the goals similar to those of us: namely to raise awareness of Ataxia Telangiectasia and / or raise money to support A-T research? Do you have a special gift, a special quality? Then we are very curious !! And we would appreciate it if you contact us …

Even if you can do something for us with your company or shop, we are happy to talk to you. Think of a piggy bank on the counter or at the corporate office, or maybe you would like to contribute to the Twan Foundation through your Christmas package … There are plenty of possibilities and we would like to think or arrange a brief presentation about our work during a meeting. . For example, the staff of ‘Stadscafé Mister Owl’ have made their money available for the Twan Foundation for two months. And the flower shop ‘De Veender’ from Ede has put a piggy bank for the Twan Foundation for a number of months.

Of course, it is also possible to make a contribution to our account number: BIC RABONL2U, IBAN NL63RABO0153.1109.96 in the name of Twan Foundation in Veenendaal

 Thank you very much!

2017/06/30 – My eldest sister invited us for a celebration dinner @ Bistro De Stadstuyn, where we often come, also with Lady Mary Stewart-Wilson 🙂

As entrée for my sister and me a “Platter Stadstuyn”.  For Pierre: goat cheese from the oven.

As main course for her: salmon with italian pasta.

As main course for me: a beef carpaccio XXL. For Pierre an entrecote with French blue cheese.

As desert for me: a “Grand Desert Stadstuyn”. Pierre and my sister: coffee.

I visited my Late Uncle John Henry Lavigne’s grave in July 2010 at the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetary in the Netherlands. My Uncle died in war at the age of 20 on August 21, 1945. He was the son of Joseph James Lavigne and Elizabeth Lavigne, of Restigouche, Bonaventure Co., Quebec. Facts: Service Number: G/23903; Force: Army; Unit: Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps; Division: 9 Field Amb.

2017/06/28 – G217

  • Everything back to “normal”: the lounge-set is on its place, the BBQ, the American style freezer/fridge and 2 refrigerators are gone 🙂
  • A lot of the beer and soft drinks are still “in stock”, as well as a part of the meat for the BBQ 😦
  • I hope that the entrance fee of € 15 per person has covered the expenses of Friso, Tim c.s.. 🙂

2017/06/25 – G217

  • The party ended earlier than planned, just after midnight, due to the fact that neighbors had called directly the police instead of coming first over and discuss the matter with  the organisers of the party: Floris and Tim.
  • The first police car arrived at 07.00 PM at the neighbors Graafseweg 215, where previously this week had been nuisance to neighbors.
  • The last and third time that the police came over was just past midnight June 24/25. The police threatened to confiscate the “nuisance obstacles” (2 sound panels of the the DJ).
  • So, Floris announced the party continued but without music and light effects. At the appointed time of 01 AM all was silent, and the party members were gone to the city”s student nightlife.

By the way, I attended the party for a while and was introduced by Floris and Tim as “the understanding neighbor” 🙂 🙂 🙂

2017/06/23 – G215

Pictures above: left the front door with the orange sign of SSHN (Society for Student Housing Nijmegen), and right the doorbells with the names of the tenants.

  1. Residents of the property Graafseweg 215 sousterrain/ground floor/first floor at {6531 ZS] Nijmegen, domicile sub 2. following, hereinafter referred to as “the nuisance to residents sub §3 “.
  2. SSHN, as owner of sub 1 named property, domicile Laan van Scheur 4 at [6501 BD] Nijmegen,  hereinafter referred to as “the landlord /owner“.
  3. Luke C. Barkhuis and Pieter J.L. Bormans, owners and residents of the property Graafseweg 219, domicile Graafseweg 219 at [6531 ZS] Nimegen, hereinafter: “the residents“.

  1. During the evening of Monday, June 19th to the morning of Tuesday, June 20, 2017, the nuisance to residents §3 in the garden of the property Graafseweg 215 sousterrain/ground floor/first floor had a cozy & loud gathering/party.
  2. When the residents wanted to rest at 00:10 on the 20th of June (they sleep at the street side of the Graafseweg, but for ventilation the sliding doors on the garden side on the first floor should be opened) there was laughter, discussions and noise of eating and/or drinking utensils.
  3. From the balcony (garden side) on the first floor, one of the residents has called to the nuisance to the residents §3, but without reaction /result.
  4. At 00:30 at night, guests started to say goodbye, in a for the residents, loudly way.
  5. One or more guests then went loudly towards the Graafseweg 223-237, also student housings with other nuisance to residents, where the concerning landlord/owner of the property being also approached for inconvenience.
  6. At 00:45 hours, after cleaning up the gathering/party environment, silence returned.

  1. In the model rental agreement SSHN, the owner/landlord states in Article D.11: “The tenant is obliged not to give landlords, residents or neighboring residents any inconvenience“.
  2. The inconvenience of room rental objects, as yours, was dealt with at the meeting of the City Council of Nijmegen on June 14, 2017 under item 12, and will be re-appealed to the City Council meeting on 28 June 2017.
  3. POLICE: “The approach to nuisance is a joint responsibility of municipalities, police, relief agencies and housing associations. But you as a citizen can also do something by -for exemple- reporting inconvenience. When people live close together, conflicts or arguments can arise. By not talking at all or not talking well, it can get out of hand. Neighborhood mediators can help you out there with your neighbors.”
  4. The new and stricter room rental policy of the municipality of Nijmegen is bad at student housing firm SSH &. Kees Stunnenberg, director of SSH & the largest student housing firm in the city, finds that Nijmegen is shooting a cannon on a mosquito with the new stricter room rental policy . The student is highly stigmatized in the new policy as a nuisance, he believes. ‘I wonder if you’re a first-year-old to feel welcome in the city, if you’re reading this.’ Also chairman Floris Boone of the student union AKKU believes that the municipality of Nijmegen exaggerates and overcomes the inconvenience problem in student housing. “The rotten apples should take you out, but do not put the student down as a nuisance. We see that happening now. That’s really a pity,” Boone says. According to SSH & Director Stunnenberg, the inconvenience caused by students, in particular, is “6,000 rooms, at least.” “And if there’s really a nuisance, we’ll get up soon after a message. We employ twelve house masters who are on our way daily.” The SSH & has especially large, separate student complexes. The number of “city houses” of the SSH & does not exceed 80. There are about 600 students living in it. House smugglers: Stunnenberg finds that there is also another large private room rental market, including real house smugglers, and that the situation may be different. “But what worries me is that Bert Velthuis, with his new approach to custody, puts the student in a false daylight. As if they are all celebrators and cause many problems in the neighborhood. However, most students are very socially involved, work hard. Many students are actively involved in the neighborhood where they live, we experience. Ten years ago we got more complaints than now.” According to the director, there are no more than twenty at the SSH & within. “Students give the city shine with their dynamics and talent. What would be Nijmegen without students? Perhaps an aging, shrinking provincial town.” He calls the note of Governor Velthuis about the room rental policy, therefore, a little bit tight. “Of course, it’s great to deal with excessive nuisance, we do it ourselves too. But not every mention of a living is evidence of excessive inconvenience. It’s sometimes nothing at all, for example a bicycle that’s wrong.” Better visible: Stunnenberg also finds it good that Alderman Velthuis demands that the landlords of the premises must be more visible to the neighborhood. “We have a SSHN tag on all our properties. Therefore, every resident can find us if they want to file a complaint.” President Floris Boone of Student Affairs AKKU considers it a good idea to organize complaints complaints better. Velthuis wants it to be kept central. “That’s a good step. But I think that complaints about other tenants in ordinary homes should also be centralized. ‘ Boone also claims that illegal property owners should be taken care of.“They do not comply with the law.” (source: de Gelderlander)

A copy of this email will be delivered at the nuisance to residents §3. However, we count on SSHN quick and adequate handling!

2017/06/20 – Yard & pond

Although we have a pump (on the pic: under, left) with built-in filter, and a big cleaning machine with UV radiation, the water what returns in the pond is far from clear (on the pic: upper right). According to our neighbor Peter we should work with plants, which absord the green stuff and turns it into oxygen. So, off to a large garden center South of Nijmegen: “Intratuin”.

What we bought: 2 baskets, to be filled with little stones and plants, and to be placed approx. 40 cm below the water surface. That was great, as our first section of the pond is 42cm 🙂 . Furthermore pink and yellow fleur-de-lis and 5 floating plants.

All arranged according to the instructions of the salesman 😛 😛 😛 at “Intratuin”, ready to sink off in the pond.

The result: the pink fleur-de-lis already in bloom. The yellow fleur-de-lis are the green stems you can see. The floating plants: not 5 but 6! Perhaps the tall, blond, blue-eyed salesman  😛 😛 😛 liked us…???

2017/06/17 – G217

Announced for next Saturday: a party at our neighboring student house & garden till 01:00AM. The two companions of the sousterrain -we are very well “on speaking terms nowadays 🙂 “- came today at the door. Preparations (decorations) apparently just delivered…

2017/06/16 – G241

A new case: at Graafseweg 241 it is also a mess with household dirt. Although the DAR (dirt collect service Nijmegen) will pass by next Tuesday, it is already on Friday morning a bit of chaos here. According to the number of bells, there live about 8 to 10 students in this house.

2017/06/15 – Horst – social duties

Now that it is about 14 years ago, that Pierre finished his practice as a GP in the village of Horst (Limbourg), thare remain social duties towards former patients, collegues and friends. Today we visited a 77 year old lady, who suffered from lung cancer at the time that Pierre left the practice (July 31, 2003) and a collegue GP of 92 years, with whom we were both involved: Pierre as a direct collegue GP and I as guest parent for a grandson in Amsterdam: Pierre Alain, son of Joost, who is a professor in bio-micrology in Osnabrück (Germany). With the collegue GP we had lunch in GEMBER

Afterwards we went to the GP’s house, next to Pierre’s former practice. The house is immense for a man alone (his wife died about 5 years ago and all 5 children live abroad or in the Netherlands).

2017/06/14 – City hall: Lord Major Hubert Bruls

Nijmegen City counsel hall

The problems about (illegal) student housing was planned as #12 out of 13 for the whole meeting. So, finally at 11.30PM, the kick-off for this problem. Dressed in white T-shirts we took our places on the front row of the public area. On the screen the current speaker, Mr. Zwart of Labour (sitting on the first row, right from the counsel member in the white jacket). Parties involved: Labour, Democrats 1966, Green and Nijmegen.Now. Green and Democrats 1966 are big parties at the counsel, because nearly all the students here vote in favor for them 🙂 . Four motions for voting. It was already past midnight when it was over… 😦 😦 😦 The invitation to attend the meeting was forwarded by our neighbors.

2017/06/13 – G223-G237

As a variation on “On a beautiful morning like this”, here the evening setting of the neighboring students of Graafseweg 223-237. Visible are 5 females and one male, the whole “assembly” coun-ted ten people, having a beer in the sunset. The picture is taken from our front balcony and the (according the owner of the student complex) offending red car is parked exactly on the driveway of Graafseweg 221, with the strict permission of the owners of Graafseweg 221.

However, the owner of the student complex, Mr. Vogelsang -husband of the owner of the buildings in question: Archi-Bel B.V., sees this as an illegal use of his property and threatens to tow away the red car (“It is only a matter of putting a chain and discard the obstacle”, as he said).

The proprietress of the car, a woman known by our neighbors, lives also at the Graafseweg (odd numbers) but more towards the city. Normally she parks the car in front of the student complex, which is -according to the angry owner- a private property. So in the last case he could ask the lady in question to park her car elsewhere. At the other side of the Graafseweg is a cycle road annex driveway, where lots of people park their car in the evening, as parking space on the odd numbered side of the Graafseweg is sparse 😦 😦 😦

2017/06/12 – G223-G237

Within 24 hours the dirt container of the student housing complex has been emptied. An angry husband of the pro-prietress ( REAL ESTATE MALDEN B.V.  / Archi-Bel B.V.) was on the phone this afternoon. “Why making all that fuss, when there sere only 4 bags for collection not placed IN the container, and that somebody would have forgotten to close the lid of the container?”. NOW the lid is visibly secured with a chain… Further-more: each Monday morning the container is emptied. So… dear neighbors, why bother?

2017/06/11 – G223-237

At the neighboring housing for students (?) the Graafseweg becomes more and more a mess. The owner of the 37 student rooms and -apartments,  REAL ESTATE MALDEN BV (related to Archi-Bel B.V.) has already troubles with the community of Nijmegen, because a part of the studio’s and apartments have been built without the consent of the Community. Furthermore the fire brigade Nijmegen inspected the buildings and declared them not safe for housing.

For royal, noble and common guests: a new “toy” in the sitting area of the sousterrain. Brand new flat screen TV with DVD-player and satellite. Very busy to install everything. Afterwards they will be controlled by 1 remote device. Set-up of this device via computer and a special website to sort all different brands and models 😦 🙂

Welcome to Graafseweg 219-sous, Nimwegen, the Netherlands!!!

When visiting Lady Helen Mary Stewart-Wilson in Somerset (August 2016), Pierre was a devoted help in the “AGA-domain”. He helped Lady Mary to uncrown strawberries. She had for that purpose a useful aid 🙂 and brought it to Nijmegen during her visit last October.

As the nights are still too cold for this time of the year, harvesting asperagus is very sparse. However the chief-in-residence cooked a wonderful first edition of this year (till June 24th). Clockwise, from top: smoked ham, asperagus with sauce Hollandaise, boiled eggs, smoked salmon. Bon appetit! 🙂 🙂 🙂

The brand new lounge set looks like there will nothing happen tonight… 😦

Instead of beer in (manly) bottles, there are now pink and green cups on the table… 🙂

what will be going on tonight???

In the afternoon of Saturday May 6 a brand new lounge set arrived. And at 07:13PM the first guest arrived for a try-out.

And at May 7 01:05AM the remains of the party were observed. At the utmost left on the picture you can see a part of the bottles beer that were still “on stock” 😦 🙂

2017/05/06 – HRH Margriet and Mr Pieter van Vollenhoven

Princess Margriet and her husband, Pieter van Vollenhoven, attended the National Military Death Recall on Thursday evening in Rhenen. Prince Pieter-Christiaan accompanied his parents at the commemoration of the military event on the Grebbeberg. They commemorated all occupational pilots and officers who have fallen for the kingdom since 1940. Princess Margriet and Pieter van Vollenhoven usually go to the Grebbeberg on 4 May, where German invasion in the Netherlands was fiercely resisted. Prince Pieter-Christiaan has been attending the commemoration for years. On the occasion, over eight hundred people have been buried.

Next week, Margriet and Pieter will also travel Canada. During the world war II the Dutch liberation was partly caused by the efforts of Canadian soldiers.

2017/05/05 – Concert on river Amstel

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima were Friday night one of the many who watched the traditional 5th May concert at Amsterdam river Amstel. More than 1.6 million people watched at home with the royal couple. This is evidenced by data from Society of TV-attendance Screening. The concert was the official closing of the National Celebration Liberation. Every year, another orchestra takes action. This year it was the turn of the Metropole Orchestra under the leadership of chief executive Jules Buckley. After the concert, the royal couple left and took the time to wake off the audience. They did this without Princess Beatrix. Last year was Beatrix’s first year to oversee the concert. As queen was Beatrix every year of the party and also the first years after her abdication in 2013, the princess celebrated freedom on and around the Amstel.

Almost every Dutch person is familiar with the German bombing of Rotterdam in May 1940. In order to force the capitulation of the Dutch army, in the afternoon of May 14th, the Germans bombed the city of Rotterdam, resulting in approximately 800 deaths. However, far fewer people will be familiar with the American aerial bombardment of Nijmegen on February 22nd,1944, although this attack resulted in the same number of casualties or maybe even more.

The bombing of Nijmegen has never received the attention it deserved. For a long time, it even remained unclear, how this bombing could have happened. The general hypothesis is that it was a mistake, but there are still people who are convinced that the bombing was carried out deliberately. This paper describes what went wrong on February 22nd, 1944, which led to the bombing of Nijmegen.

Image result for Nijmegen bombing 22 february 1944Operation Argument

In November 1943 the Allies developed a plan to carry out a large-scale air offensive against the German aircraft industry. Only through the destruction of the German Luftwaffe, the Allies could gain air supremacy, which they needed for the invasion of Europe’s mainland. The code name for this operation was “Argument”. The idea was that for a week, every day massive air raids would be carried out at major centres of the German aircraft industry, such as Gotha, Leipzig, Tutow and Posen (now Poznan in Poland). All American and British air forces in Europe: the U.S. 8th Air Force, stationed in England, the U.S. 15th Air Force, stationed in the Mediterranean and the Bomber Command of the Royal Air Force (RAF) would be deployed for this attack. The Allies bombed “Around the clock”. The Americans at daytime and the British at night. This way the Germans would not have a single moment of rest and repair activities would be hampered. For the implementation of this operation, however, a number of requirements had to be met. First the U.S. Air Force in Europe had to be reinforced with additional aircraft. Weather conditions would be an influencing factor to the offensive. The best conditions for the operation would be a clear sky above the targets to be attacked. Moreover, there were problems in the Allied high command. Lieutenant General Carl Andrew Spaatz (commander of the 8th and 15th U.S. Air Force) and the Supreme Allied Commander, Dwight Eisenhower, had a conflict about the strategy. Spaatz feared that Eisenhower would use the Air Force for the preparation of the Allied invasion, before the total air supremacy had been achieved. Finally, on February 19th, 1944, the weather forecast was good enough for the launch of Operation Argument. Big Week, as the operation was called as well, began in the night of February 19th to 20th, with a massive attack on Leipzig by the RAF. The British suffered big losses. Eighty seven of the 734 aircraft did not return. The goal of Operation Argument on Tuesday, February 22nd, 1944, was the Gothaer Wagon Fabrik AG, a major producer of the Messerschmitt BF 110, a German night fighter / fighter-bomber. The attack would be carried out by the 2nd Bombardment Division, commanded by Major General James Hodges (1894 – 1992). The 2nd Bombardment Division was divided into three Combat Bombardment Wings (Combat Wing): the 2nd, the 14th and 20th. The 20th Combat Bombardment Wing consisted of three Groups (Bomb Groups): the 93rd, 446th and 448th. The 446th Bomb Group was established on April 1st, 1943, and was equipped with a heavy bomber of the type Army Consolidated B-24, better known as the “Liberator”. Her base was Flixton Air Base in Bungay (Suffolk). The first mission she flew on December 16th, 1943. Colonel Jacob J. Brogger was the commander since September 27th, 1943. The operations commander was Captain William A. Schmidt. For the 446th Bomb Group, the “Big Week” began on Sunday, February 20th, 1944, with an attack on Gotha. The Wagon Fabrik was bombed, but whether and how severely the plant got damaged is unknown. On February 21st, an attack was carried out on the airport of Handorf in Niedersachsen. Most of the crew of the Bomb Group were relatively inexperienced, since none of them did have more than five missions on their records. If, for whatever reason, the factory in Gotha could not be attacked on February 22nd, the bomb group had to divert to the airport of Eschwege in Hessen. If both targets appeared to be not achievable, then the attack should be aimed at: “Any military objective in Germany, preferably aerodromes.”

The attack

Image result for Nijmegen bombing 22 february 1944After the briefing was over, 37 aircraft of the 446th Bomb Group took off around 9:20 am, divided into three sections. The operation was severely hampered by bad weather. There was a very dense blanket of clouds and, due to a light snow storm, the visibility was sometimes limited to only 270 meters. When the aircraft reached the Dutch coast at about 12:25, the weather was getting better and vision became brighter. The American formation had to deal with attacks by German fighters and shelling by German Flak (anti-aircraft artillery). However this was not a major impediment to the 446th Bomb Group, especially since the German attack was mainly focused on the rear of the formation of the Combat Wing and the 446th flew in front. Meanwhile, however, Major General Hodges, the commander of the 2nd Bombardment Division, received ominous reports about the situation on the English coast. Because of the bad weather (the dense clouds and strong winds), many aircraft lost contact with their original group. Complete sections were forced to return to base. This created an unclear situation. The formation of aircraft was being stretched, which made them very vulnerable to enemy attacks. Major General Hodges decided that it was irresponsible to continue the mission and gave a recall at 12:25 o’clock, a signal to terminate the mission. Pilot Cole, commander of the second Section of the 446th Bomb Group, received the recall and passed it on to Captain William Schmidt, who flew as second pilot in one of the aircraft of the first section. Schmidt tried to have the headquarters confirm the message, but failed because he could get no connection. The failure of the radio connections was due to several reasons. Firstly, the radio reception was impaired by the snow storms that occurred over England. Also, in one of the aircraft, the transmitter of the radio installation got stuck, resulting in a constant radio transmission from the aircraft involved, which hindered the other aircraft in transmitting radio messages. Also bad communication between the aircraft and the Related imageheadquarters could have been caused by “window” or “chaff”, the aluminium foil trips that were dropped by the Allies to disturb the German radar. Schmidt was unable to get into contact with headquarters in England, he had made contact with the commanders of the other Bomb Groups in the Combat Wing (the 93rd and 448th), through the high frequency radio, in order to ask whether they had received the recall. And, yes indeed, they did receive the recall. This was partly the reason why William Schmidt still decided to suspend the initial mission at 12:55 hours. However, at that moment, the Combat Wing was over Germany already. Therefore Schmidt ordered to look for an alternative opportunity target. The 446th Bomb Group did split up into the three original sections. A chaotic situation occurred. The 446th performed some difficult turns while there was a strong high wind of 90 knots . Next to that, some aircraft of the 446th had to turn away several times to avoid aircraft, that approached from another direction. Two aircraft from the 453rd Bomb Group joined the first section of the 446th. These aircraft actually belonged to the 2nd Combat Wing, but they lost sight of their formation and therefore they joined the 446th Bomb Group, since it was safer to join a larger formation. While flying in a larger formation, the aircraft were able to cover each other far better with their on-board weapons in case of an attack. These two aircraft were armed with 80 cluster bombs. Subsequently, the first section of the 446th Bomb Group carried out an attack on the German city of Goch in the vicinity of Kleef, the second section did not drop their bombload and the third section carried out an attack on Kleef . At least this is what Schmidt, later on, would report about the mission. Maybe, even during the attack, some crew members of the 446th Bomb Group noticed that they were above the Netherlands, but they followed the guiding aircraft of Schmidt and, whether or not accidentally, dropped their bombs at Nijmegen and Arnhem.

The bombardment

Image result for Nijmegen bombing 22 february 1944The Americans intended to bomb the railway yard of the city of Nijmegen. The destruction or damaging of railways and adjoining facilities was an important opportunity target for the Allied air force, as this would cause big transport problems to the enemy. At the dropping of the bombs, Vere McCarty (the bombardier of the front plane of the first section) made a miscalculation. It was customary for the bombardiers to focus on the dropping zone of the front plane. McCarty was afraid that the other bombardiers would not take the high wind speed on the ground into account. For that reason, he had the bombs dropped on a building, at a few meters distance of the railway yard. However, the aircraft that flew behind dropped their load of bombs at the correct spot (exactly at the spot McCarty recommended ), or even too early, resulting in a direct hit of the centre of Nijmegen instead of at the railway yard. At 12:14 hours in Nijmegen the air-raid warning sounded to warn the citizens about an air attack. Hundreds of bombers flew over Nijmegen, on their way to Germany. At 13:16 hours the safety signal was on, indicating that, according to the Air raid Protection Department (LBD), the danger was over. All of a sudden, a LBD sentry noticed that a number of aircraft approached from the east. A few minutes later (at 13:28 hours) bombs were dropped. A new air-raid warning came too late, partly due to the fact that such a signal could only be issued if the Germans had granted permission to do so. Due to this, hundreds of people were out on the streets during the air attack. As mentioned earlier, a large number of bombs did hit the centre. The shops V&D [ a kind of Marks & Spencers] and Hema [a large dime-shop], at the Grote Markt, were among the first buildings which were hit. Fortunately, only few people were in the shops at that very moment. However, the Germans had requisitioned a part of the V&D building for the Deutsche Feldpost, the post office of the German Wehrmacht. In this post office, thirty people were killed. At the same time when the V&D building was hit, the Saint Stevens Tower (originating from the 13th century) got hit as well. The tower collapsed, killing five employees of the LBD, who used the tower as a watch tower. Image result for Nijmegen bombing 22 february 1944Additionally, due to the tower, falling on top of several blocks of houses, dozens of people on the ground were killed. On the Lange Burchtstraat, the primary Montessori school of the Sisters of Jesus Maria Josef got hit by several bombs, killing eight sisters and twenty four children. Other streets in the city that were hit: the Houtstraat, Bloemerstraat, Doddendaal, Oude Varkensmarkt, Parkdwarsstraat, Achter Valburg, Stikke Hezelstraat and the Krayenhofflaan. Especially the bombs of the 453rd Bomb Group claimed many victims. The 12 aircraft of the 446th Bomb Group were each equipped with twelve 500 lbs high explosive bombs. These bombs were specifically manufactured to cause damage by destroying buildings and other infrastructure. The aircraft of the 453rd Bomb Group were each equipped with 40 HNM41 cluster bombs. Each of these bombs consisted of six smaller, twenty pound, bombs. The moment these bombs exploded, they spread a cloud of shrapnel. Such bombs were not intended to destroy, but they were meant to kill personnel. Nine cluster bombs remained in one of the aircraft, so, a total number of 71 of these bombs fell on the city. This makes a total of 426 deadly cluster bombs, which hit Nijmegen. Some of the bombs landed on the Valkhof and Kelfkensbos (street in the city centre), which resulted in thirty-five deaths and numerous injured. One of the firefighters who arrived at the spot, described the situation as follows: “Corpses, grey of dust, mixed with blood. Grey, everything is grey. God, what a dust! Emergency services, stretchers, people running around. Desperate faces”. The other part of the cluster bombs landed on the crowded Stationsplein [railway station square]. At that very moment, a tram and bus were waiting for departure, both loaded with passengers. Both vehicles were hit by the rain of bomsplinters. Eighty people met their death on this square.

Fire and rescue

Related imageDue to the tapestry of bombs, several houses in the city caught fire. As a result of dry weather and moderate wind, the fire spread rapidly. The heaters and paraffin stoves, which were largely present in the city, contributed to the start of a massive conflagration. Extinguishing the fire was severely hampered, because of the fact that the water supply was destroyed at several places in the city. A major part of Nijmegen was without water. Dozens of people, who actually survived the bombing, but got trapped under debris of collapsed houses, now got killed by the fire. In the absence of water pressure the fire fighters had to pump water, among others, out of the river Waal. However, this was a time-consuming method. Next to that, the Nijmegen fire fighters had to contend with a shortage of equipment. Partly because of these circumstances, the fire in the city lasted for days. Initially, the relief work was progressing slowly, which was partly due to the fact that the telephone operator at the police headquarters had been killed during the bombardment. This caused complicated communications at the beginning, which hampered the rescue activities. The hospitals in Nijmegen could not cope with the hundreds of injured people. This necessitated the establishment of several first-aid posts in, among others, the building of the Twentsche Bank at the Mariënburg and in the Convent school at the Biezenstraat. Also some emergency hospitals were set up, including in the Internaat Klokkenberg. The attack caused more than 300 seriously injured and hundreds of slightly injured people. The number of serious injuries was less than the number of dead. Most likely this was due to the fact that many injured lost their lives during the fire. The hundreds of people, that were killed as a result of the attack, were taken to the empty auction building on Vondelstraat. The identification proceeded laboriously, because many bodies were badly burned. Still, some deceased could be identified by showing personal belongings to possible next of kin. Nijmegen itself only had fifteen coffins in stock, so one had to call on other cities for extra coffins. Not every victim had his own coffin. Thus, the nineteen people, who got killed in the clothing shop W.G. Haspels at Lange Burchtstraat, were buried in seven coffins. From an organizational point of view it was impossible to bury more than seven hundred dead separately. Therefore it was decided to inter the dead in common graves at the cemetery at the Graafseweg. There was a collective funeral ceremony for all the victims, which took place in the great hall of the Vereeniging, on Saturday, February 26th, 1944. The ceremony was quite unique because it was organized by civilians and any religious symbolism was not represented. The reason for the absence of religious symbolism was to avoid the choice between a Catholic or a Protestant service. At the cemetery itself, however, both the priest and the vicar were given the opportunity to address those present and to carry out their respective religious ceremonies.

After the bombing and memorial

As a result of the attack, hundreds of buildings were destroyed and thousands of inhabitants of Nijmegen were left homeless. The official number of deaths by the bombing was 772. Most likely this number is underestimated, because, as a result of the fire, various bodies were completely carbonized. Also is it not clear how the situation was with the people in hiding in Nijmegen. There was a certain number, but it is unclear how many of them got killed. The Germans tried to make propaganda with the U.S. air raid on Nijmegen. They distributed posters of the ruined city with texts like: “Van je vrienden moet je het hebben (You are well off with your friends)” This propaganda had little or no result. When Nijmegen was liberated in September 1944, the Americans were welcomed cheerfully, like in the rest of the Netherlands. It took a long time before an official monument was established for the victims of the bombing. After the war the priority for Image result for groesbeek war cemeteryreconstructions prevailed in Nijmegen. A big part of the city had been destroyed by the bombardment and during the battles of Operation Market Garden and the ensuing period, when Nijmegen found itself in the front lines during five months. Nijmegen had to be rebuilt and it would become more beautiful and better. The attitude at that time was “look ahead and do not complain too much”. The municipality was of the opinion that commemorations should be organized by the civil population and thus they deployed little initiative for that. An influencing fact was that the city was bombed by an ally, and therefore it was a sensitive subject to raise. From the 60’s the interest in World War II in Nijmegen started to slacken. In that time, there were only few commemorations in the city. Only at the end of the 20th century, interest in World War II increased again and the demand for a monument for the victims of the bombing of February 22nd, 1944, grew stronger. This monument was created in 2000 and was placed on the Raadhuishof, at that time the location where the Montessori school was located, in which 24 children and 8 sisters had been killed. It represents a four-meter high swing. Also an annual official commemoration of the victims of February 22nd, 1944, was established in 2000. The disaster of Nijmegen has not been included in the Dutch collective memory. However, the number of deaths by the bombing certainly justifies it. Therefore, it is correct that the bombing receives increasing attention, especially in recent years. In 2005, a memorial stone was unveiled at the General Cemetery at the Graafseweg, the place where all the victims of the bombing are buried. The memorial contains a poem of the poet H.H. (Harry) ter Balkt: “The sadness fell down on the city, heart cutting grieve for the heart and the soul and the time of the city; fire spoke in tongues to the seven hundreds and to the persons killed after the stroke of the ax: ‘Now your time is no longer with you’. Empty, the dragon chariots flew away from our friends, mourning grey and yellow light fell down after the raid, extinguished for ever as it seemed, silenced”.

How are the dead commemorated this year?

Throughout the country we are for 2 minutes quiet at 20:00 to commemorate the victims of World War II. In addition, there are many more meetings on May 4th. What are the most important anniversaries today?

In Amsterdam, the country’s biggest death memorial is located on the Dam. There will also be Prime Minister Rutte, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima. They put a wreath on the National Monument. Writing author Annejet van der Zijl arranges a lecture. This memorial will be live from 18.45 live on NPO 1. In addition to the National Death Reconnaissance on the Dam, there are 47 memorials throughout Amsterdam. Witnesses, descendants, former and present residents also tell their personal stories about the war in 37 locations spread throughout the city.

The Hague
At the Waasdorp area in The Hague a large quiet ride takes place. At that place in the dunes, the Germans killed hundreds of resistance fighters. In front of the parade the survivors and relatives of deceased resistance fighters run. On the plain, a big clock sounds before the two-minute silence. RTL does live report of this memorial. Also in Madurodam, the National Children’s Memorial is held for the second time.

From 19:30 there is a commemorative ceremony at the Domplein. After the two-minute silence there is a short speech by Mayor Jan van Zanen and a defilement along the resistance monument under the guidance of the Domcarrillon. In addition to the memorial ceremonies in the evening, church services, concerts, prayer services and quiet tours are held throughout the day.

In Rotterdam, Mayor Aboutaleb will put a wreath at the various commemorative ceremonies. From 18.30 there is a central memorial meeting in Sint-Laurenskerk. The following quiet tour takes place at 19.30, which goes from Grote Kerkplein to Stadhuisplein.

In the former camp Westerbork in Drenthe all day commemorations take place. In the museum, eyewitnesses tell about their experiences in the camp. At 13.00 in the forest near the campsite the theater performance We are played outside by young people who grew up near Kamp Westerbork. In the evening there is a Quiet Tour and a commemorative program, including Douwe Bob.

The Battle of Groningen took place during the final month of Second World War, from April 13 to 16, 1945, in the city of Groningen between a mixture of Image result for Battle of Groningen WW IIGerman soldiers, Dutch and Belgian SS troops numbering 7,000 against the entire 2nd Canadian Infantry Division, though the whole division was never in combat at any given time. There were also substantial amounts of Luftwaffe units manning flak guns in the area. Groningen was also the site of the headquarters for the Sicherheitsdienst in the North of the Netherlands. The German command structure was poor and the defenders had never exercised together.

The Canadian division, consisting of nine infantry battalions, a machine gun battalion, and a reconnaissance battalion, was battle experienced with a proportion of partially trained reinforcements. Armour from the 10th Armoured Regiment (The Fort Garry Horse) and the 9th Armoured Regiment (The British Columbia Dragoons) was used in support.

Image result for Battle of Groningen WW IIGerman objectives

German soldiers in the city were determined to keep enemy forces from German soil while their Dutch SS colleagues had reason to fear for their lives if forced to surrender. German troops also needed to control the city to cover the withdrawal of forces from Friesland to Germany and defending the Ems entrance into Germany, important because German surface vessels and U-Boats still used Emden as a port.

Allied objectives

Wary of advancing into the western Netherlands and incurring heavy casualties (as well as losses to the densely packed civilian population) at a late stage of the war (fighting in Langstraat and Betuwe showed the soldiers very favourable to the defence), the First Canadian Army instead moved northeast, supporting the flank of the British 2nd Army as they entered Germany proper.

German forces were mainly deployed in the ancient city centre shielded in part by an ancient canal. Some troops were deployed in the southern suburbs. A German pocket in the power station surrendered after the fall of the inner city. The inner city was reached on 14 April. Western approaches to the old town (Oude Stad) were blocked because the bridges over the canal were destroyed. The Herebrug bridge in the south of the old town was not destroyed, but it took a day before the Germans with machine guns were defeated in the buildings north of a circular ‘circus’ on the north side of the bridge. The Canadians managed to enter the north of the city centre, Nieuwe Stad, after two hours of Image result for Battle of Groningen WW IIfighting in the Noorderplantsoen park, which was placed where the city walls used to be in the 19th century and before. The fight in the central market square, Grote markt, was the fiercest part of the battle. There were several German machine guns in the buildings north of the square. The buildings had to be destroyed by tanks. The Nieuwe Stad was conquered, but the Canadians could not reach the Oude Stad from the north, due to fierce German resistance. The German commander surrendered on 16 April once it was clear further resistance was useless. The Canadians used armour effectively in co-operation with their infantry. Artillery support was forbidden out of fear of harming the civilian population.

The death toll included approximately 130 Germans, 43 Canadians, and 100 Dutch civilians. Some 270 buildings were damaged or destroyed in the fighting. Over 5,200 Germans surrendered (including 95 officers) and the remaining Germans (about 2,000) fled northeast, and the 2nd Division again met them in battles such as the Battle of Gruppenbuhren near Delmenhorst.

Groningen was one of the largest urban battles of the war for the Canadian Army; while Ortona was made famous by news reports referring to it as “Little Stalingrad”, Groningen involved five times as many Canadian soldiers in direct combat.

At the Municipal Cemetery Esserveld in Groningen are 16 graves of soldiers from the Commonwealth. At one location are the graves of 9 British soldiers and 1 New Zealand soldier. On the other location are the graves of 5 British soldiers and 1 New Zealand soldier.

2017/05/02 – Hungry fox enters villages in village in Betuwe region.

Een vos. Foto ter illustratie.

Een eend.Hobby farmers with chickens and rabbits please note: the fox is coming. Especially in Lingewaard the population is “completely out of the claws”. On Sunday evening a fox was signaled at the Kapelstraat in Gendt. “In the floodplains, they have already eaten a large part of the animals that run around there, so they are now looking for food in the built-up bowl. A worrying situation. And because they are too much, they also spoil the pasture birds, which are so heavy”, suggests hunt seeker Willy Jansen of Wildlife Management Unit Overbetuwe.

Thirty foxes
Kippen. Now there are about thirty foxes in Lingewaard; Fifteen males and just as many females. But at the end of this month, five more boys will be added to each other. Then more than a hundred foxes suddenly run around. Especially ducks, chickens, pheasants and rabbits in Doornenburg, Angeren and Gendt, where the hungry fox trapped between the rivers, has been warned. “At some point, we must come into action to maintain the diversity of wildlife. Control and damage control. But the problem is that we are not allowed to hunt for a large part of the Klompenwaard and in the Gendtse, Bemmelse and Huissen. And soon in a large part of Park Lingezegen no longer. That is the area of state forestry”, says Jansen.

Een konijn in het wild. The Gendtse Forestry Rick Basten of National Bush Maintenance has a tip for hobby farmers if they do not want to become a victim of the predator. “To protect the chickens and rabbits, it is advisable to place a half meter netting in the ground”, he advises. Jansen argues that Lingewaard can actually be hunted in too many places. “The government wants to maintain the stock of hare, rabbits, pheasants and pastures by specifying areas that can not be hunted. If the total supply of food would be enough, that would not be bad. But that is not the case. The large number of foxes eats everything and then shreds the built-in bowl”.

2017/04/06 – Official kickoff commuter Arnhem – Düsseldorf, despite problems

De trein van Abellio kwam donderdagmiddag vanuit Düsseldorf naar Arnhem, alwaar de lijn tussen beide steden officieel werd geopend.

The new rail link between Arnhem and Düsseldorf has been opened Thursday afternoon officially. Despite problems with the new trains software, the commuter did not run far, reported carrier Abellio. The commuter would leave this morning at 5:44 am, but could not. The NS has deployed buses between Arnhem and Emmerich and expects the problems to be solved 15.30. Around 19:00 the trains should run according to the timetable, says Abellio.

A train would have arrived at 12.45 from Duisburg in Arnhem, with German representatives. In Arnhem they would meet a Dutch delegation, among other NS CEO Rogier van Boxtel and Gelderland deputy Conny Bieze. On the program included the “baptism” of the train. Because of the problems is that festive program retrenched, says a spokeswoman for the NS.

For the stretch has Abellio, a subsidiary of Dutch Rail, purchased new trains, the Stadler Vamp 3. This electric trains that start up quickly, is suitable for three types of power systems: 15 kV alternating voltage between Düsseldorf and Elten; 25 kV between Elten and Zevenaar and 1.5 kV direct voltage on the Zevenaar-Arnhem. In recent months, it held its test runs. The RE 19, as called the Rhein-IJssel-Express in transport language, would from today link Arnhem and Düsseldorf on weekdays from 5:44 am in the morning until 22:44 in the evening (Arnhem departure times). Once the train pulls into Dutch stations Arnhem and Zevenaar, it crosses the Dutch-German border and the commuter stops afterwards in Emmerich, Oberhausen and Duisburg too. The final destination is the main train station in Düsseldorf.

2017/04/04 – Spring arrives!!!

2017/04/04 – Jesse Klaver would like to have addressed a wider audience in the elections and want to connect with his party. That said GroenLinks leader tonight in The World Keeps Turning. ,,We wanted to attract people of the Freedom Party to the left loft, but it did not work”. The young politician will not have much to say about the formation talks, but suggests -with a wink- or determine what tricky negotiation points.

Klaver believed during the campaign that GroenLinks would become the largest party in the Netherlands. ,,I was somehow a bit disappointed, yes, of course you want to achieve the best results, but here I can live with it though.” His party won March 15 ten seats and now holds fourteen seats in parliament. According to the GL-leader the Turkey-riot was a gamechanger in the campaign. ,,But Rutte stood there and did it just very well. You deserve it”, he says.

When the conversation turns to the formation Klaver falls silent. ,,I can say nothing about. We have barely begun to say honestly. Next week we start really.” VVD, CDA, D66 and Green were the first to the table to form a new coalition together. For now there are mainly made about the procedures. The real bargaining begins next week. A tough job that all parties in agreement.

Netflix and coach
,,Two things are definitely on the table of negotiations”, quips Klaver, ,,the new coach and all episodes of Survivor Designated should be on Netflix.” The politician can not wait until he can see all episodes of his favorite Netflix series. That episodes week to week are available bothers him. ,,That looks on TV, and I do not want. We have to do something. I want that I can see all the episodes at once.”

2017/04/04 – TOLERATE? NO, ACCEPT!!!

Ronnie and Jasper are grateful. Many Dutch had themselves photographed holding hands, to support the battered gay couple and to act against gay hate. “We get so much support from all reactions”. Özcan Akyol responds. And an overview of the ‘holding hands’ campaign. Özcan Akyol.“Should we tolerate this? No of course not. Tolerance is a buzzword that is created by people who tolerate the deviation of others reluctantly. There lies a superiority in the idea that we need to squint one eye like two lovers of the same sex in public kiss each other. In the Netherlands everyone can manifest themselves on an equal basis. Infatuation can not be guided by the terror of the maladjusted. So it is not about tolerance, it’s all about acceptance. What we see in this photo, is one of the core values of our liberal state: freedom and equality. is not to change these achievements.”

2017/03/30 – Dutch economy

The income of Dutch households increased by 1.4 percent last year. It reported the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) today. Both the height of the wages, as the number of workers increased. The mortgage debt has increased despite a decline in the fourth quarter last year. The increase in income was smaller than in 2015, according to Statistics Netherlands. A major source of the increase in income, the statistics office noted, were the wages of employees. These increased in 2016 by 8.1 billion euro, a growth of 3.2 percent. CAO wages were 1.9 percent higher than a year earlier, the biggest increase since 2009. At the end of 2016 households did have a mortgage debt higher than a year earlier. At the end of the fourth quarter was 664.4 billion mortgage debt. ,,On balance, households 8.1 billion more mortgages than they paid back. This increase in debt has occurred in the first three quarters, were redeemed on balance in the fourth quarter,” said the CBS.

The Dutch government did well. In 2016 they achieved a budget surplus of 2.9 billion euros. The remainder relates to 0.4 percent of gross domestic product (GDP). A year earlier there was still a shortfall of 2.1 percent. The last time that the government had a surplus was in 2008. The following year, followed by the outbreak of the financial crisis, a deficit of 5.4 percent. 33.5 billion deficit in 2009, the government went to 2.9 billion surplus in 2016, noted the statistics office.

2017/03/30 – FINE for Schiphol Airport

Schiphol will be fined for 25,000 euros by the Authority Consumer & Market (ACM). The airport company has tinkered with the requirements for bus transport between certain gates and the terminal without having consulted the airlines. Schiphol possibly appeals.

In 2015 Schiphol decided to bring passengers per bus to and from the aircraft in some places. That was according to the company to be able to separate passenger flows within and outside the Schengen area better. The decision, according to Schiphol indeed aligned with the customers, though this did not happen in the formal consultation on the tariffs in 2015. Although travelers have not suffered from the ACM finds the offense serious enough to impose a sanction. ,,The state of affairs at Schiphol has a direct impact on the daily operations of airlines”, says director Henk Don. ,,It is therefore important that they are involved in the right way as Schiphol wants to change certain conditions.” Another factor is that Schiphol more often occurs arbitrarily, without consulting with its customers. That behavior does not suit a monopolist, thinks the ACM. The regulator noting that no damage has occurred and that airlines have been informed. Therefore, it is chosen for a relatively low penalty.

The decision of the ACM can lead to problems at Schiphol. From 2018 no more airport consults annually with airlines about the tariffs, but once every three years. As important operational decisions in this consultation should be addressed, they will be too long in the future on the shelf. Schiphol is considering an appeal.

2017/03/30 – Krikke is third female mayor of large cities

It is the first working day Pauline Krikke (55), the first female mayor of The Hague. It’s 2017, so it would not be special. Yet it is not often that a woman at the helm of the city-state. In the four major cities is only the third woman ever allowed to bear the title mayor. Jozias van Aartsen (VVD, 2008-2017), Wim Deetman (CDA 1996-2008) and Ad Havermans (CDA 1985-1996). These are the last mayors of the royal residence. No woman in sight. In Amsterdam, there has never appointed a woman and Rotterdam can not distinguish well. The only city of the four major who stands out from the rest is Utrecht. From 1981 -1992 stood Lien Vos-van Gortel (VVD) at the helm and from 1999-2008 was that Annie Brouwer-Korf (PvdA).

Who is Krikke?
The origins of Friesian lives in Arnhem, but has definitely been feeling the Government city. Until March 7 she was a member of the Senate, and they had to be in this city. That is why they have a pied-à-terre in the Square. This time, from September 3, 2001 to July 1, 2013, she was Mayor of Arnhem. In her farewell as Mayor of Arnhem Krikke was appointed Knight in the Order of Orange Nassau. Previously, she was an alderman in Amsterdam.

Van Aartsen praise: Fantastic mayor of The Hague
Former mayor Jozias van Aartsen has now truly passed the baton to Pauline Krikke, installed since tonight as Mayor of The Hague. Van Aartsen, the town at least in good hands. He himself once her must learn the tricks of the trade. In preparation for his mayoralty Hague he was looking for someone who could help him on his way. ,,I was no mayor, sometime in February 2008, I believe, and I thought, I have to find a mayor I do not know so well. So no Job Cohen and Ivo Opstelten”, Van Aartsen says. And he came to Pauline Krikke, who was mayor of Arnhem. ,,I have with her as a fantastic evening in Arnhem. It was a very pleasant conversation, in which she explained how she did that box.”

And with success, Van Aartsen presents smiling. ,,I have only received praise recently, I think that was partly due to her.” According to the former mayor, and also honorary citizen of the Hofstad, the Krikke strength lies in dealing with people. ,,The Hague gets a very good, very concerned and later mayor is fantastic in The Hague. I can so confidently back home.”

Eindelijk kreeg Pauline Krikke vanmiddag de Haagse ambtsketen omgehangen.

Proud Krikke: It feels great
Proud as a peacock stood Pauline Krikke, with the chain of office obtained tonight around her neck, to the press. “I have long looked out.” ” It feels great”, said the new mayor of The Hague brilliant to this newspaper. ,,It was a very quick process, so it’s happened very quickly, but I’m happy that I can now really start today.” Thus begins her a time to the city and get to know the people in the city. ,,If you look at from the outside The Hague, you see the embassies, the Parliament and the Royal Family, but I zieook half a million citizens of The Hague with whom I want to build a good relationship.” That ambition is shaped by a tour of the city, where Pauline Krikke goes to places that they really should not miss as AD readers. It is in her be a while before she has already seen those places. ,,The Hague is a very big city, with many different aspects. I am very pleased that the judges, officials, municipal and readers of AD help me there to find a way. I look forward to meeting lots of people and get to know many places in The Hague.” Officially Krikke still lives in Arnhem, where she was mayor for twelve years, but in their own words they will be most in her pied-à-terre on the Square. ,,First we have to sell our house in Arnhem and then we go to buy a house in The Hague.”

Martin can “fly” from Schiphol to Eindhoven at his attic

Eindhoven - Martin bouwde een echte cockpit op zolder en deed daar 12 jaar over

EINDHOVEN – A cockpit of a Boeing 737, that has not everyone, but Martin Liempt Eindhoven goes. In the attic.

Oops. The landing iss not completely flawless. We flew from Schiphol to Eindhoven Airport, and Martin Liempt was so busy explaining, that we just accidentally hit a little bit of the runway. What doesn’t matter, because we are safe at Van Liempt’s attic. He has recreated a cockpit of a Boeing 737 over twelve years, bit by bit .

Maybe in the Netherlands are two or three such replicas, but not four, Van Liempt suspects. A flight simulation today he mimics the flight after Amsterdam to Eindhoven. In conjunction with the lifelike cockpit he approaches this reality so close that a few pilots who fly and want to keep their skills up to date, regularly come simulate a flight with him. They fly to Innsbruck for example, through a difficult flight path between mountains. In building his cockpit Van Liempt could fall back on his training earlier Philips Business School. ,,If you left from there after four years, you were an all round professional. I had pretty good grades, was very accurate, but there was trained as an instrument maker. That was not for me.”

Train Operator has assigned Martin of Liempt, for 36 years. With an enduring interest in aviation, he not only takes out the attic. Also with model airplanes Martin works well. He flies with different models – a P51 Mustang, a Cessna, a Jodel Robin – and quite good. ,,I make little accidents.” His hobby brought Van Liempt to Schiphol-Oost, at the best possible flight simulator, which allows you to feel the movements of the device. ,,There you’ll just not in, but I managed through a pilot who sometimes comes here. I was as sick as I do not know what. But remain 3.5 hours hey.” Assembling his own cockpit, with the same software as a real Van Liempt went fairly well, if he is adept with computers. ,,I put together the first IBM personal computer. A XT, 4.7 Mhz was then.”

Prosperous flight
The flight from Schiphol is progressing well. Liempt start of the motors, the associated sound is at cockpit level. He sets the altitude of 9000 feet on the runway and know that he appropriates is long enough for the run of a half kilometers needed by the Boeing. On the attic wall white images are projected from the real Schiphol, moving with the drive unit. And later fly also, images of the Netherlands from the air or from the cloud. Just all real.
Halfway through the flight is to see how we fly over the Waal. the puddles of Ekkersweijer become visible in the deployment of the landing. The pictures on the wall in terms of weather votes reflect the real weather today brilliant sunshine. The landing is smooth, but Van Liempt is momentarily lost concentration by all the questions of his visitor. ,,Then it goes wrong. Therefore, they always fly with two pilots.” We end up here in the grass next to the runway, but Van Liempt corrects fast, quiet and taxiing towards arrivals.

2017/03/30 – Experiment with narrow Graafsebrug in busy period

De Graafsebrug over het spoor in Nijmegen.

The announced narrowing of the Graafsebrug outbound the city will not take effect as a serious trial has shown that this does not lead to congestion on the Graafseweg, Emperor Karelplein and in the surrounding areas. That is the outcome of a council debate Wednesday in the Nijmegen council about the traffic operation. A board majority also demanded that the test is maintained in a period of time that it is really busy on the Graafseweg. So immediately after the summer festivals, but only in September and also at the beginning of October in rainy weather, as more people get into the car.

The trial will not begin until the crossings are already adapted to the early Graafseweg, more secure, and if there are smart traffic lights that react more quickly to traffic calming. ,,Only then is a pilot with an artificial narrowing really wise. If we just put a few plates, the test does not work”, said Pepijn Boekhorst, leader of the Greens. He is a big supporter of the narrowing of Graafsebrug outbound the city, from two to one lane for cars. ,,Because that delivers a wider and safer route for cyclists and pedestrians.”

However, most of the other groups have serious doubts about the proposed narrowing. They fear the consequences, especially for the Keizer Karel Square. Marc van Nijnatten (PvdA): ,,This square is not a problem for traffic. It always runs well here. Let’s keep that so. If traffic on the square it is established, we have really a huge problem. We should not want to.”

Councilor Harriët Tiemens of Traffic was clearly surprised by the great opposition. They pointed out that it is the implementation of a decision already taken in 2011. When the choice is made: through traffic routing via the new city, the crossing and the routes cross only obstruct the city for local traffic. The routes in the city would thereby be enhanced. A large majority of the council announced yesterday that if the test shows that the routes fill up on and around the Graafseweg, the narrowing of the bridge for cars has to be canceled.

‘Pin only’ places in Nimwegen increasing.

Ook bij Kaashuys Koning Willem kun je alleen met pin betalen.

Eef van Hoogstraten, owner of Subway sandwiches at a fuel station on the Heyendaalseweg, puts cash in the ban after a robbery. ,,Because the safety of employees.” According to the entrepreneur would hardly anyone pay more cash. ,,Most, 1 percent. Usually a customer who has never been before.”

Scientists: Nijmegen defense tower is Disneyland in Valkhofpark

The possible rebuilding of a dungeon, a 50 meter high medieval tower in the Valkhofpark Nijmegen causes a stir in the city. Hundreds of people have already signed up for a demonstration next Saturday against the construction of the tower in the heavily protected Valkhofpark. Scientists speak of a “fake construction”, “Disneyland” and “heritage flu”. Some political parties are calling for a new referendum on the desirability of rebuilding.

The rebuilding of the tower is since 2006 in Nijmegen on the agenda. In that year, once held a referendum on the keep with the elections. A year earlier Nijmegen was temporarily rebuild the tower of scaffolding and tarpaulins which was a success. A majority of residents voted for rebuilding.

Heineken and Sligro
Reported this week after ten years of negotiations, an investor who wishes to operate the tower with brewer Heineken and wholesaler Sligro as tenants. The developer wants exhibition space, a lounge restaurant and bed and breakfast. The tower should be ready in 2019.

National monument
The community seems prepared to issue a building permit for reconstruction. In 2006 warned the National Cultural Heritage and the Ministry of Culture which rebuilding is contrary to the cultural and historical significance of the Valkhofpark. Both the park, the soil full of archaeological remains and the views have protected status. The Valkhof as a whole is a national monument.

2017/03/25 – Tonight the summertime starts, but why? And how long?

Next night we set an hour ahead the clock to 2:00 am and will thus summer time. But why? There is still much to do to change this time. Where does the adjustment come from? And what are the advantages and disadvantages? Five questions about the Summer Savings Time.
1. Since when daylight saving time exist?
The first person who talked about the introduction of summer time was the New Zealand George Vernon Hudson. He proposed to advance the clock two hours, in order to adjust the time to the rhythm of man. It was not until 1916, during World War I before being actually implemented. The German Empire then allowed him. Germany thus had the first, after the Netherlands and England followed.

2. Why summertime exist?
Because the war was expensive, Germany devised a plan to save coal. The clock moves ahead one hour, there were less need coal. In 1946 this measure was reversed, but in 1977 the global oil crisis made sure he was readjusted. Even then the reason was energy.

3. Are there any other advantages?
Various studies have shown that in addition to the energy savings there are also other advantages of summertime. For example, the crime would decrease the longer light period at night, would be fewer deaths if we maintain it during winter and would promote tourism. Partly because people stay longer sit on terraces. For the supporters enough reason to keep him.

4. Is the Summer Savings Time worldwide?
No, not all countries participate in the summertime. Thus, the clock remains in countries including China and Russia untouched, while moving forward on Australia Lord Howe Island pointers just half an hour. The date is different when the clock may be put forward.

5. Why is there so much criticism?
The No camp is based on studies that show the dark side of the Summer Savings Time. He would have negative effects on the health, because it disrupts the biorhythm and thus indirectly gives more prone to heart attacks and strokes. He also takes care of missed appointments and confusion, because often it is unclear whether the clock forward now or should reverse. As far as the action group Stop the Summer Savings Time, the night will also be the last time we move the clock. This past Monday handed a petition to put an end to the summer time. The European Commission is currently reviewing its effectiveness.

2017/03/24 – Stairs at Stephans Cimetery named after bellfounder

De trappen tussen de Stikke Hezelstraat en het Stevenskerkhof. The stairs between the Stephan’s Cimetery and Stikke Hezelstraat will get a name. They will be named “Geert Wout Stairs”, after a bell founder. Geert van Wou was born around 1450 in Nimwegen. He was one of the most famous founders of bells in Western Europe. His clocks are made with great skill and are known for their beautiful sound.

Main Chime
In the Stephan’s church hangs a bell that was cast by Van Wou in 1484. The bell is not so long ago restored a chimes manually a few times in a year. Watchman and whistleblower Peter Kuipers suggested to name these steps after Van Wou. The Nimwegen City Councel has approved the idea. Thus the memory of the local artist and craftsman are kept alive.

More staircases
Nimwegen has more staircases with a name. There are the South Staircase and the North Staircases leading to the Goose Hill from the Stephan Cimetery. And the Ferry Arch Stairs from Lindenberg to the quay of the river Waal.

2017/03/18 – And after the results are known…

The cabinet of the Netherlands is the executive body of the Dutch government. It consists of ministers and junior ministers (staats-secretaris). The cabinet requires support from both chambers of the Dutch parliament to pass laws. Thus to form a stable government sufficient, and most preferably majority support in both chambers is required. Due to several factors (the multi-party system and the nationwide party-list system of proportional representation) no political party edith(in the modern sense) has ever had a majority in parliament since 1900. Indeed, since the adoption of the current proportional representation system in 1918, no party has even come close to the number of seats needed for a majority in its own right. To gain sufficient support in both chambers it is therefore necessary to reach an agreement of multiple parties to form a stable government. The negotiations leading to this agreement are the cabinet formation period in the Netherlands. Cabinet formation is engaged in, in two situations. After general elections the house of representatives is renewed. The changing size of party representations in this most important of the two chambers, will require a new cabinet to be constituted. Even if the same parties continue, the agreement has to be renegotiated to fit election promises and shift in powers. Another reason for cabinet formation can be the fall of a cabinet, i.e. those cases where the agreement between parties breaks down. In the  latter case (in principle) a new cabinet can be formed without general elections, although in practice the house of representatives is almost always disbanded and early general elections are called. Forming a cabinet can be a time-consuming process. The monarch has a formal role in appointing the newly created cabinet and in accepting the resignation of a fallen cabinet. Traditionally the monarch played an important advisory role in cabinet formation process, although this role comes from tradition and convention only. First, the monarch has private individual meetings with the Presidents of the Senate and House of Representatives and the vice-president of the Dutch Council of State. Next, the monarch meets the chairs of each parliamentary party in the House of Representatives, the political leaders of all parties. The talks concern how to interpret the election results, which parties should form the new cabinet and who should be appointed (in)formateur (Mrs Edith Schippers, Labour, minister of Health in the present cabinet). Because this advice is a matter of public record, the monarch cannot easily take a direction which is contrary to the advice of a majority in parliament. On the other hand, the substance of talks behind the closed doors of the palace remains undisclosed.

Information phase

On basis of this advice, the monarch then appoints an informateur who explores the options for a new cabinet. The informateur often is a relative outsider and a veteran politician who has retired from active politics: a member of the Senate, Council of State or a minister of state. He generally has a background in the largest party in the House of Representatives. It is also possible to appoint multiple informateurs, with backgrounds in other prospective partners. The informateur is given a specific task by the monarch, often to “seek a coalition of parties with coalition agreement and a majority in parliament.” The informateur has meetings with individual chairs of parliamentary parties, and chairs sessions of negotiations between them. During these negotiations the parties barter, abandoning some policy goals to achieve others. From 2012 onward the right to appoint a informateur has been transferred to the House of Representatives.

Formation phase

If the informateur is unsuccessful, he tenders his resignation and the process starts again, with new consultations and the appointment of a new informateur. If he is successful, he returns to the monarch, who then appoints a formateur. Conventionally he is the leader of the largest party in the prospective coalition and thus also the prospective prime minister. The formateur leads negotiations between parties willing to cooperate to form a cabinet. He leads the talks about all the issues the informateur has not resolved. Often these include the coalition agreement, the distribution of government portfolios and the personal nominations to the cabinet. If the formateur is successful, the monarch formally invites him to form a government, then appoints all ministers and state secretaries individually by Royal Decree (Koninklijk Besluit).

Each minister declares an oath of loyalty to  the Constitution in private. After this the entire Council of Ministers and the monarch are photographed on the stairs of Huis ten Bosch palace. The newly minted ministers all tender their resignations from the House of Representatives, as cabinet ministers aren’t allowed to be members of Parliament. The new cabinet then proposes its plans to parliament, and is confirmed in office.

Demissionary cabinet

After the dissolution of parliament and before the appointment of a new cabinet, the incumbent cabinet stays on as a demissionary cabinet, limiting itself to urgent and pressing matters and traditionally not taking any controversial decisions. If the cabinet fell because one of the parties removed its support, it is possible for the ministers and state secretaries representing that party to leave the cabinet without the cabinet becoming demissionary: the other parties then continue to form a new cabinet, which is called a rump cabinet, often a minority government. It is also possible for the monarch to ask the ministers to remain demissionary in office until a new parliament has been elected.

Importance of the formation

The formation is often considered as important as the elections themselves – or even more important. This is because the coalition agreement lays down most of the policies for the future cabinet.

2017/03/18 – International media:

Jesse Klaver is the Dutch Trudeau

International media fall over since the elections on Wednesday over each other to draw comparisons between Jesse Klaver (GroenLinks) and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Not only are they both progressive, they also seem once more as two drops of each other, thus including The Daily Mail, Mashable and Time. ,,Forget Justin Trudeau, the Dutch politician will win the heart of the Internet”, headlines Mashable. The online magazines write about the ‘historic victory’. Green (GroenLinks) headed by Jesse Klaver and political similarities between the two men. They fight both for the rights of refugees and against populism from the right. Also on Twitter go photos of Klaver and Trudeau side by side around while people wonder whether the two coincidentally related. Even their casual clothing during meetings with voters – a shirt with the top buttons open – agreed. Since Klaver with his 30 year fifteen years younger than the 45-year-old Trudeau is mostly joked about him as a ‘younger brother’ of the Canadian politician. In an interview responded Klaver already on the equation: ,,I am very envious of the muscles of Justin Trudeau, because I’m not nearly as muscular as he”, he joked. Trudeau among other loves boxing and yoga..

Why the turnout was so high? Who voted Labour? And where does the profit of the Green? Election research Ipsos examined this week the voters streams. We put three notable findings from the research for you in a row.Middle class was massively vote, young people did not. With a turnout of 80.4% matched the rise in 2006. The last time the turnout was higher was in 1989. And for the first time voted more than ten million people. If you look at education level and age, it seems that it is mainly the middle class that caused the high turnout. They were namely especially through middle education and voters between 25 and 49 who have gone in comparison with 2012 more to the polls. With low education, there was hardly any growth. Among young people under 24 there was even a decrease of 77% to 67%. The differences in attendance were huge this year. The low-skilled 18-34 year jesseolds voted Wednesday only 48%. With highly skilled peers was the turnout 85%. Elderly voted smaller difference. The low-skilled people over 55 voted 82%. Of highly educated people aged over 55 was 95% in the polls. Labour has become older party and remained in the north of the country. In 2012 the Labour Party rank and was a reasonable reflection of society. Now the party is thrown back at her core she has become quite gray: 44% of the voters are over 65, compared to only 20% in 2012. Under-65s is the Labour Party after the VVD (Freedom & Demogracy) and CDA (Christian Democracy) the third party in the Netherlands. Except that he’s older, the average Labour voter is better educated than in 2012. But an elite party, the PvdA is not. The percentage of highly educated (44%) is still lower than D66 (Democrats 1966) (58%), Green (55%) and the VVD (48%). Highly educated women chose Jesse Klaver, Green voters was the former PvdA voter. The Green profits seems partly due to women. Was in 2012, yet 48% of Green voters woman, in 2017 was 62%. In particular, the popularity of Green among highly educated women is striking. 36% of voters. Green is 19% for a highly educated man. There is no party where difference is so big. Green owes its profits, in particular to former Labour voters. Nearly half of the voters of Green voted in 2012 the Labour Party. Only 10 percent came from right-wing parties, and a further 13 percent of people who did not vote in 2012.

The House of Representatives, or Second Chamber (Tweede Kamer) is composed of 150 seats elected by proportional representation in a single nationwide constituency, with a de facto threshold of 0.67%, and residuals assigned by the D’Hondt method. Electronic voting has been banned since 2007 and votes must be cast with a red pencil. Following reports from the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) that Russian hacking groups Fancy Bear and Cozy Bear had made several attempts to hack into Dutch ministries, including the Ministry of General Affairs, to gain access to secret government documents, Dutch Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations Ronald Plasterk announced that votes for the election would be processed by hand, although that decision was later reversed. Preliminary results were published on 15 March, but the official result will not be announced until 16:00 CET on 21 March. The polling firm Ipsos released an exit poll as soon as polls closed, which indicated that the VVD won 31 seats, the CDA, D66, and PVV each won 19 seats, GroenLinks won 16, SP won 14, PvdA won 9, CU won 6, PvdD won 5, 50PLUS won 4, DENK and SGP each won 3, and FvD won 2. The exit poll also recorded a turnout of 82%, which would be the highest since 1981 if confirmed. The elections are also seen as an indication of interest in the Dutch political system in the Caribbean Netherlands, with low turnout in the 2012 election.

2017/03/10 – State holds its ground: train hijacking at De Punt indeed barred

Beeld van de treinkaping in 1977

The Dutch government, contrary to the court that the case of the train hijacking at De Punt in 1977 yet expired . The State therefore wants interim appeal in the lawsuit, which revolves around whether Marines have executed two of the Moluccan hijackers. That the Department of Defense announced today. The ministry also does not want the Marines who were involved in the rescue operation be heard by the court. That would be very stressful for them. Although the case is pending, the court in The Hague decided last month already that the case is not time-barred and that the Marines need to be heard. Defence fears that the decision may have consequences for all cases where lethal force was used by military and police since 1954.

Lawyer Liesbeth Zegveld, assisting the survivors fears delay. ,,According to the court the marines were supposed to be heard in 1977. Now the state is trying to postpone it again. It is high time that the State gives priority to truth”, she says.

The judges were critical of the way the government has made in recent decades. As autopsy reports and other vital information were not made available to the relatives. That happened only in 2013. Therefore, the relatives of the dead hijackers Max Papilaja and Hansina Uktolseja previously could not file a lawsuit.
Or the State interim appeal to the ruling, is not yet certain. It is not common, but Defense finds that an exception should be made. Should the court find that the delay is too large, or Defense acquiesces, in the hearing of the Marines can continue despite the appeal.

Dutch Green Party (Groen Links) leader Jesse Klaver attends a campaign rally in Amsterdam on March 9, 2017. The Dutch parliamentary elections are set to take place on March 15. / AFP PHOTO / EMMANUEL DUNAND

That said, the Green Left party leader this morning in the NOS Radio 1 News. He is referring to the climate targets of Paris, he is concerned to achieve. ,,We are sure to achieve the climate goals of Paris, therefore the burden on polluting business must be increased, agriculture are biological needs, and there should be a toll”, said Klaver. ,,The measures how to reach you can discuss.” Klaver would like a left government, but excludes only co-operation with the PVV. They exclude groups of people, and we do not want that. “I want to have my Netherlands back”, I would like to say to Geert Wilders, says Klaver.

Seldom there were so many visitors at a campaign rally. Jesse Klaver finished his tour of concert halls into the former Heineken Music Hall with five thousand “fans”. What makes Green Left so sexy? Vote strategically on me, was the message of GroenLinks leader Jesse Klaver tonight. All left-wing voters should establish a central government preventing VVD, CDA and D66. ,,They want to hold on to the status quo. We want change”, Klaver said in a full Afas Live, the former Heineken Music Hall. To allow a government ‘left’, one left-wing party to become the biggest and Klaver trusts that it is his party. ,,Make us strong. Make us more.” His appeal was heard this evening by five thousand people and 4,500 people followed the live stream simultaneously. In previous meetings, party disguised as a rock concert in pop temple stood the girls in line for a selfie with the GroenLinks leader. ,,That is also the campaign director of GroenLinks. Jesse Klaver presents itself as idol”, said Ipsos researcher Jeroen Kester.

Yet there is hardly any difference between men and women supporters, he sees in his data. The largest group of “fans” is not in the age group 18-24, but in those aged 25-34. The older generation, fifties, are due to the young age of Klaver often skeptical of the youngest among the party leaders. Data from Ipsos shows that GroenLinks the most benefits from the decline of the Labour Party. Kester: ,,The energy Diederik Samson had in 2012, Klaver has now. “But the potential GroenLinks voters are not very sure of himself. ,,Our research shows that the preference for the Green is the least fixed. That is also because some of the new recruits of the Labour Party comes. They nevertheless still doubt, maybe wait until the Labour Party is going to do something that they can return to the Social Democrats.” On May 12, 2015 Klaver came (now 30) at the helm of the Greens. The architect of that leadership changeover was the ‘old’ leader Bram van Ojik. He met Klaver for the first time in a café in Utrecht, in 2008. Of Ojik then worked on the new manifesto of GroenLinks. GroenLinks youth organization CROSS, where Klaver then chaired, had its own version. ,,Jesse wanted to hand over to me. It was a charismatic boy with a passionate story. I do not want canonize, but the fact that this meeting me is still as sharp mind, says enough. “Years later, Van Ojik saw Klaver back in the House. ,,I saw that he was a dossiervreter: tax planning, education, pensions.” About Klaver’s young age of Ojik never had doubts. ,,Great talents should not keep you too long on the bench. Cruyff was on his 29th already passed its peak. “More important from Ojik found that the Green with Klaver would be ready for the future. ,,We still have to redeem it on March 15, but the polls show good figures.” Because from the moment Klaver took over from Van Ojik began the ailing party on the rise in the polls. ,,Although he was not exactly booming”, says Ipsos researcher Jeroen Kester. Initially, the effect was small, from 5 to 8 seats. But over time it grew. Currently GroenLinks is in the Bearing Pointer, the average of six polls including that of Ipsos, 15 to 17 seats. Logically, the party beams itself: ,,Jesse is the right man at the right time with the right message”, that articulates campaign manager Wijnand Duyvendak likes it. There’s some truth in, confirms researcher Kester: ,,The message of the Green is durable, European and focused on the future. The profile of Clover fits exactly with those topics. He is young and fresh, will present the Green supporters. That fills to each other.”

Inspired by Jesse
We talked prior to the event with several visitors. What attracts so to them?

  • ,,I’m here with my parents, sister and friends, because I still doubt among the Party for the Animals and Green”, said Lena Hartog (25) from Amsterdam. ,,I think I’m now convinced by Jesse. This is still a historic night, especially by the movement continues to grow. it gives so much energy. I think the Green after the elections can make a difference.”
  • Farshad Rasa (23) from Venlo, says: ,,I’ve never been at a political meeting, but I’m the last few months, inspired by Jesse. That’s because the positions – that education could be better, for instance – but also because of his personality. I come from Afghanistan and I try not to watch, but his half-Moroccan origin also plays a role. I think he is therefore more reliable.”
  • ,,Why am I here? In one word: inspiration”, let know Marianne van der Silk (52) from Enkhuizen. ,,This is because of the positive way in which the Green campaigner Jesse therewith so speaks not only to the young people I have become GroenLinks member through him… – I used to be a member of D66 But the party do not bind the youth I wanted to be like tonight are all these people with the same ideas as me … That gives a sense of reward “…

2017/03/09 – “Thierry Baudet will finish the job of Pim Fortuyn”

The new party Forum for Democracy emerges suddenly in the polls, with 1 or 2 seats. Supporters see party leader Thierry Baudet as a new Pim Fortuyn.
A day on campaign.
It rains in Venlo. Thierry Baudet (34) hopes to win the city for themselves – not coincidentally because Geert Wilders comes from Venlo – but there is no dog on the street. Baudet and his young volunteers keep their spirits up. ,,I’m so glad it’s raining, or I would have to distribute flyers throughout the day”, quips Baudet. Opponents see in him a narcissist, a vanity. Of confidence Baudet therefore has no defect. He calls himself “the most important intellectual of the Netherlands.” “When I hear Jesse Klaver talk, I hear emptiness. I actually ideas and actually learned.”

Like peer Klaver Baudet has many female fans. ,,Can I have your picture?” asks Sandra de Boer with her girlfriend. With a smiling face and the hand on the shoulder Baudet posing with the lady of 52. She does not know who they should vote, but this newcomer is definitely a chance. ,,He struck me immediately on TV. His looks eh. And that name remember you.” She’s not the only middle-aged woman who charmed Baudet. Handsome man ,,Huh. I get it warm”, laughs Loppan Struving (61) from Weert.

Pim Fortuyn
Supporters see in him a new Pim Fortuyn. An intellectual who studied history and law and wrote nine books and knows what needs the Netherlands. His main points: binding referendums, leave the European Union to stop “mass immigration” and Muslims to sign for Dutch values such as equality between men and women. Geert Wilders wants more or less well, but it says so rudely, find Forum Trailers. And he has no feasible solutions, Thierry did. ,,He will finish the job of Pim Fortuyn”, there’s Marko Corbee from Amersfoort firmly convinced. Corbee is the driver of Baudet and rides him three or four times a week, the country where Baudet venues speaks. His message attracts many students and entrepreneurs. For the party work smart people with good jobs. A cameraman records everything what Baudet and put short videos of them on Facebook. Forum is the most active of all parties. The Limburg tour continues. The vans Forum, plastered with posters of Baudet and number two criminal lawyer Theo Hiddema, drive to Roermond. In a packed bar Baudet used big words. There is “an attack” on going “our nation state” by the “perfidious elite”. He combines deep distrust of politicians Hague with conspiracy theories and doomsday thoughts about the demise of the Dutch culture. He verluchtigt it always with a twist. If someone asks what time is: ,,It is five to twelve people!” Nodding approvingly as Baudet says the economy has grown mainly because there had to be extra beds for migrants. Or if he claims that the Netherlands has an extremely high crime rate. ,,He says it with charm and flair. That fascinates me”, says listener Elmer Schouten (61). He does not know or is his voice to Baudet, but feels it addressed. ,,Rampant immigration affects our culture. If you say that, you will be dismissed as racist.” That the son of a pianist and psychologist himself an elitist background, he sees as an advantage in his fight against the elite. ,,I have years walking around, I know exactly how I should address.”

2017/03/09 – Nimwegen prostitutes quit en masse with their work

De ramen aan de Nieuwe Markt in Nijmegen.

In one year, twenty Nimwegen prostitutes have stopped their work. While not even the goal was the new, last year set up prostitution approach. ,,Sex worker is simply a legal profession in the Netherlands”, say Rinke Rozie and Karen Gloudemans GGD Gelderland-Zuid, where the director is of this new approach. ,,If people voluntarily choose a legal profession, I do not think you like to bet they’re going to do something else”, says Rozie.

Remains Mother
The aim of the approach is to combat abuses and introduce the appropriate care. Prostitutes who need care, running against it that the congregation now organized in the district. But you say not that easy, “I am a sex worker by profession in the district where you may also have to keep mom at school”‘, said Rozie. To tackle this, the municipality has set up a hotline. Sex workers with a question via this hotline within the team of Rozie and Gloudemans.

Request for help
The approach started in February 2016. Since then have 58 sex workers reported having a request for help. In addition to the 20 which have disembarked, have withdrawn there 10 interim. For 28 is a personal journey.

2017/03/09 – Platform 1 Station Nijmegen Central  till 2019 out of service

Drukte bij voetgangersdoorgang station Nijmegen. Nijmegen, 7-3-2017 .

It will take at least until 2019 before trains from platform 1a and 1b at Nijmegen Central resume to leave towards Arnhem/Utrecht/ Amsterdam/Schiphol. Only then the drive is adjusted so that travelers to the north no longer need to pass staircases and tunnels to platforms 3 and 4. Since the timetable of the train is modified last December, trains towards Arnhem/Utrecht/Amsterdam/Schiphol leave from platform 3 or 4. On the escalator and in the tunnel too it is sometimes dangerously crowded during rush hour.times.
To reactivate track one again, however, there must be applied a so-called change-over for the train from Wijchen. Until then there will be sporadic trains from one track to leave, but not in the regular roster.
The new schedule handles from now on ten trains per hour between Arnhem and Nijmegen. Previously, there were eight: 2 return trips to Amsterdam/Den Helder, 2 return trips to Schiphol, 2 return trips Zwolle-Anhem-Nijmegen-Roosendaal and 2 return trips regional traffic; there will be added 2 return trips regional traffic. That means, that at Nijmegen Central Station 20 trains per hour will leave, each 3 minutes 1. The problem is the railway bridge North of the station, where 2 tracks must handle all that traffic.

2017/03/05 – Hard clash between left and right during Carré debate

The Carré debate tonight gave a hard clash between left and right sides of the AOW, the excess in healthcare and the Dutch identity. The party leaders had a lot of pressure, as can be seen ten days before the elections of March 15 little movement in the polls. It is expected there will be a result of this debate can be seen little movement in the polls. The parties’ leading candidates were all charged and sharp. There were hard content clashes, which were not really personal. Because the parties constructive party leaders know they must negotiate after March 15 on a cabinet. D66 leader Pechtold was the renewed candidacy of Rutte for a third premiership to. ,,Do not you think that the Netherlands being “Rutte-tired”.” Democrat took him to his credibility throughout Europe: ,,You behaves in the Netherlands as a PVV’er, but in Brussels as a D66’er. Please send only one D66 there.” Rutte said he has more experience than Pechtold and learned that “there are no perfect solutions.” ,,If I hear that you are not ready yet.”

CDA party leader Buma was left parties hard at: ,,The promise to bring the excess to zero, they know that it can not”. He had his sights focused on PvdA leader Lodewijk Asscher. ,,You reigned four years, each time increased the deductible. And now comes syringe eleven.” Asscher defended that it may be because the economy is doing better. The debate on the excess was mainly a series of harsh accusations over and over again without the other had to respond to the opportunity. As CDA leader accused Buma the Labour Party to remove the emergency in thirty area hospitals, where the party in its election manifesto that do not skimp. Or accused Labour leader Asscher D66 to raise the deductible for the chronically ill to 450 euros. PVV leader Geert Wilders, was not there, just like last week in the first TV debate. However, he has aired a television commercial for his party in advertising.

Neck and neck
It is the first television debate in which ten days before the election also participated VVD party leader Mark Rutte. The pressure was great because the VVD in the bearing pointer (the average of all the various polls) is neck and neck with the PVV of Geert Wilders. Rutte had to attack but his dream opponent missing Sunday night. The two sides are indeed the two big ones, but they remain a half weeks before the election fluctuate around 25 seats. The fact that they declined the premiership debate last Sunday, has ensured that CDA and D66 have risen in the polls and Rutte and Wilders now breathing down the neck.

The Bearing Pointer VVD remains the PVV just a zeteltje for. To be fought third place between CDA, D66 and Green Party. The Labour Party supports the SP in seventh place.

Green Party leader Jesse Klaver is the winner of the Carré debate. According to a poll by DVJ Insights among viewers of the debate. 17.4 percent of the people voted for Klaver. Eight party leaders took part in the debate. Besides Jesse Klaver were Mark Rutte (VVD / Democrats), Sybrand Buma (CDA / Christian democrats), Henk Krol (50plus), Marianne Thieme (Party for the Animals), Alexander Pechtold (D66 / Democrats 1966), Lodewijk Asscher (PvdA / Labour) and Emile Roemer (SP / Socialists).

Alexander Pechtold of D66 landed on place two, VVD leader Mark Rutte on three. As last Marianne Thieme ended the Party for the Animals. 582 peopleTo the question: “Who do you think is the winner of the just-aired debate on RTL4?” answered 582 people, selected on the basis of a representative sample:

  • 1 Jesse Klaver (GL / Green Party) 17.4%
  • 2 Alexander Pechtold (D66 / Democrats 1966) 16.7%
  • 3 Mark Rutte (VVD / Freedom & Democracy) 16.6%
  • 4 Henk Krol (Party 50+ people) 15.1%
  • 5 Emile Roemer (SP / Socialists) 11.9%
  • 6 Sybrand Buma (CDA / Christian Democrats) 10.6%
  • 7 Lodewijk Asscher (PvdA / Labour) 7.4%
  • 8 Marianne Thieme (PvdD / Party for the Animals) 4.4%

Marianne Thieme

The respondents were also asked who was the loser of the debate. According to 22.5% was Marianne Thieme. Then Henk Krol (50plus) with 17.3% and Lodewijk Asscher PvdA) with 13.7%

2017/03/04 – Vedder and Bruins support in Jinek the agriculture

Dutch farmers are world leaders in the field of sustainability. That message has Eline Vedder and Dirk Bruins on Friday night in the TV program Pauw & Jinek kept on Green Party leader Jesse Klaver. Vedder and Bruins, respectively farmer in Ruinerwold and Dwingeloo, sat in the audience during the broadcast that was devoted to the upcoming elections. They were reacting Eva Jinek the views of Klaver. Both made it clear that is in politics, including by the Green Party, often a negative picture of the farmers. “Green Party talks polarizes on agriculture. That hurts me”, says Vedder.

Passion for art and animals
She explained how much passion she has for her work and for her animals. “We make sure that our cows are happy with themselves and us good piece of earth can pass on to our children.” Klaver did not address the allegation of Vedder on the website of Greem Party a photo of a cattle battery, while the battery is prohibited in the Netherlands for years. However criticized the photo turned out Saturday to be removed. The leader of the Green Party acknowledged that the farmers get too bad price for their products. “We have to strengthen the position of farmers,” he said. At the same time, he said that his party is opposed to intensive farming. “We found that as many farmers have to be organic.”

Extremely durable
Bruins responded by noting that conventional agriculture in the Netherlands is extremely durable. “We are known as the best in the world. Pity our Dutch politicians do not see.”

2017/03/04 – German wolf sets standards for Netherlands

The discovery of a dead wolf on the A28 yesterday morning does nature lovers rebounding from their seats. ,,It is the third year in a row that a wolf is signaled in the Netherlands. It is therefore not whether he will settle here again, but when.” Road inspector Bert Bontjer did yesterday morning what he does so often he went off on a report of a dead animal along the highway. That it turned out to be a wolf, he noticed only locally. ,,I immediately thought: this is not a dog. It was a beast, or about 50 kilos”, he says. ,,Still, I was not so impressed.” For many nature lovers it is different. Wolves Kenner Leo Linnartz is overjoyed with the fact that another wolf was spotted in the Netherlands. He says: ,,Three years ago, to see there were no wolves still here. This has now just started the third in three years and the year. So it is clearly increasing, which is nice to see.” That wolves return, has to deal with a changed attitude of man against the wolf, Linnartz explains. ,,They were once a threat to farmers, because the animals attacking their livestock. And so they were shot. Thus, they were gone over Europe around 1850. Nowadays there are more opportunities for farmers to protect themselves against wolves and, moreover, the government can come to the rescue. The threat is gone.”

w2To protect
It is therefore done much to facilitate the return of the wolf. Linnartz: ,,There is now done much more to protect them. In Germany the number of herds increased in recent years from 45 to 55. There is also very precisely track which couples where life. High probability that this wolf is coming from.” Ranger Andre Donker, who worked for years in South Drenthe, yet adds: ,,It is striking that the place where the wolf was hit, the very place where it was once planned for a wildlife crossing. That could have prevented that would have killed this animal. Too bad.” Donker is also excited about the return of the wolf: ,,It is a vital link in the ecosystem. The wolf hunting is excellent and just the animals that already some are weakened. He knows well is currently maintain in Poland and Germany, but sooner or later he will also settle. For me it is a matter of ten years.”

2017/02/28 – Locking up 99-year-old Annie in a police cell attracts worldwide attention

The desire of the 99-year-old Annie from Nijmegen to reside briefly in the police, attracting worldwide attention. Journalists from around the world from the BBC to ABC News in the United States called the Nijmegen police about the “trap” of the aged Nijmegen. To her great pleasure was the nearly 100-year-old briefly in the police.

Bucket List
Annie burst out laughing when her handcuffs were affected. Sitting behind bars was one of her wishes that the woman had left on her bucket list. Her niece told a cop. Was promptly picked up her elderly aunt at home and closed on the desk. Also Metro, BuzzFeed and NY Post paid attention to the ‘lock’.

2017/02/28 – Birthday on shore…

Birthday on shore has been rare since 2011. In such occasions there was a birthday package: breakfast by room service, champagne, a present, a wish card and flowers. The table mates always arranged a dinner at the Captain’s table. Before that I had a party, in my cabin or in the Observatory lounge. World cruises edition W1201, W1401 and W1602.

Guards Wilders also concerned them-selves: “Our screening should be better”.

The guards of the police team around Geert Wilders want a stricter screening is to be admitted to their unit. They do not understand how Faris K. despite a conviction could be admitted to the Safety and Security Department (DBB). Jan Struijs, president of the Dutch Police Union (NPB), comes to that conclusion on the basis of interviews with members of the service. ,,If there are operational information is leaked over Wilders where at any given time is, for example, then can bring the other team members at risk. DBB’ers find: set the bar higher. This discussion is now conducted happy lot.” The DBB’ers think that policemen who want to join the service must be spotless in terms of integrity. Now it is possible for candidates who suspiciously in that area or even condemned, nonetheless can be DBB’er. In the case of K. Faris was his conviction in 2008, not prevent, the National Police acknowledges.

Extra check
Struijs announced this weekend that an additional check is made: all employees of the Safety and Security (DBB), additional checked. This does happen by the current method.

Rico Briedjal, former security guard Wilders says he agrees with the DBB’ers that screening should be more strictly correct. ,,The threshold should be higher. I understand the concerns of Wilders’ well.” K.’s lawyer Peter Plasman said that the suspect had boasted most about his work against women. Justice indeed suspects him no longer leaking information to criminals. Minister Stef Blok (Justice VVD) said then that Wilders is not jeopardized.

Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem (Finance, Labour) repeated that message this weekend, but also aroused Wilders irritation. Dijsselbloem said the PVV leader affair “is larger than on the basis of the latest facts would make sense.” The PVV leader reacted furiously on this. He finds these soothing words too easy. ,,The government is taking fortunately the measures to be taken. But stop saying that everything is safe, because that is nonsense.”

2017/02/27 – Jesse Klaver significantly tested during the first televised debate

After a cautious start on the radio, forced the party leaders of Christian Democrats (CDA), Democrats 1966 (D66), Green party (Groen Links), Labour (PvdA) and Socialists (SP) each other during the big RTL TV4-election debate to follow suit. Especially GroenLinks leader Jesse Klaver was tested significantly. He wanted to -other than it does occur frequently- not rule out a cabinet with the VVD. Jesse Klaver tried his rival Lodewijk Asscher (Labour) Friday yet to make move away from the Freedom & Democracy, he himself would have none of it. Because it was still early Klaver Friday a handshake Asscher on a debate on Radio1 to keep the VVD outside an upcoming cabinet. To Emile Roemer (SP) Klaver forced to the same question. ,,The PvdA I heard tell beautiful stories progressive, but then they went down well with the VVD in the Cabinet. I hear you complain that since the last elections, the VVD lap sat down, but later you do the same.” Klaver parried with difficulty: ,,I do not exclude the VVD, because I then make a promise I can not keep” Roemer measured: ,,That is clear.”

The debate beforehand seemed a little to the debate-of-the-rest, flawed given the absence of Extreme Right Party for Freedom (PVV) leader Geert Wilders and the VVD leader Mark Rutte, the two largest parties in the polls. Who let go sulking default, when RTL decided to expand the number of participants. But the absence of the two largest parties on the right, made the debate participants no less important. Certainly Jesse Klaver (Groen Links), Sybrand Buma (CDA) and Alexander Pechtold (D66) avoided each other not much in the polls. They make all no secret that they want Rutte driven from the Prime Minister’s office. Simultaneously Roemer and Asscher trying to hang on. The last scrambles in the latest polls even slightly up. So there must be profiled, for example by Sybrand Buma which positions the lack of Wilders and Rutte as respectable alternative. In terms of asylum: ,,We can not continue to absorb more and more refugees, even if we wanted to. Our country comes under too much pressure, people rightly complain about.” Of Immigration: ,,I think Islam is no enrichment of our society.” Above all party leaders try to show themselves worthy of prime minister. Asscher acted as a conciliator, and said “everyone should overrule his own views.” By behaving in quiet tone to speak, he managed to force the rest sometimes in the role of listener. Even in a direct debate with Buma he wanted to have ‘our agreements’. ,,I’m looking for connection, The Netherlands does not want politicians who tell each other what they have done wrong.” Buma, sighing: ,,Netherlands is more divided than ever.”

Pechtold also trying to seize that role, as ‘responsible leader’. As he Buma complains that the CDA four years not ‘home made’ then had to cut the cabinet and would not support measures which Buma. ,,When you got out you were not there. We took this responsibility”, called  Buma: ,,I am proud that we are not in that backroom helped the government, because that’s were great which measures not supported you.” So there is here and there are still voters have to steal from each other. Jesse Klaver therefore went straight into debate with Pechtold. Opinion polls show that many voters doubt between these two parties. Pechtold accused the Groen Links leader precisely that misleads voters. ,,You purchase the excess off, but let those people still pay in a different way by introducing seven new taxes.”

James Taylor-Watts (born October 27, 1997), better known as James TW, is a British singer-songwriter. His single “When You Love Someone” peaked at number 28 on the Billboard Adult Pop Songs chart. James was born in England, the son of Sarah Taylor-Watts and Richard Taylor-Watts. He was named after James Taylor, one of his parents’ favourite musicians. He attended Warwick School, the oldest private boys school in England. James’ father, who plays guitar in a wedding band as a hobby, once found young James banging on jthe drum kit at home. Shortly thereafter, the band’s drummer wasn’t able to make it to a gig. So the band had a decision to make: either let 10 year-old James play or cancel the gig. James played that evening and has been performing on a regular basis ever since. He picked up guitar at 12 years old and started playing piano the following year. In 2010, James started his YouTube channel at 12 years old. In 2014, James self-released an EP titled Just A Number which rose to number 6 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter chart. In early 2015, Shawn Mendes, an artist discovered on social media, found James on YouTube and praised him on Twitter. Mendes’ label, Island Records, then noticed James and he signed with them shortly thereafter. On February 19, 2016, James released a music video for his first single, “When You Love Someone”, through Universal Music. The song reached over 60 million Spotify streams and peaked at #28 on Billboard’s Adult Pop Songs chart. On April 15, 2016, James released his debut EP titled First Impressions, featuring 5 original songs as well as a cover of Torn by Natalie Imbruglia, which earned 17 million Spotify streams and peaked at 15 on the Spotify Viral 50 chart. James was the sole opening act on the sold out Shawn Mendes World Tour. On January 23, 2017, James TW performed “When You Love Someone” on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. James released a new single “Ex” on February 17, 2017 while premiering the video via Billboard on the same day.

2017/01/13 – Green wants to know whether licenses for DONJON are approved.

The licenses for the rebuilding of the donjon (defense tower) that once stood on the Valkhof, finally settled? That is the fraction of GroenLinks in the council Wednesday told the councilors Ben van Hees and Bert Velthuis. The group is asking not to because they are able to jump themselves to rebuilding the medieval tower. Green Left has always been opposed to the rebuilding. But Councillor Noel Vergunst is the long uncertainty surrounding the keep sick. The return of the tower stands a decade on the agenda. In June, showed the mayor and aldermen know that by 1 January of this year would be clarity about the keep. Vergunst therefore now wants the council to know how it is with those d2licenses. It is known already that the Foundation Donjon shortly before New Year submitted the official application for the rebuilding of the keep in Valkhofpark, with the municipality. But those documents have yet to be assessed by the Building and Housing Department and the Quality Committee. Vergunst therefore again fears delay has had enough of. He thinks Nijmegen must now give priority to the promised improvement of the park. There Nijmegen has already earmarked two million euros previously.

Each year the management of the St Stephan Church in Nimwegen thanks the volunteers for their time and efforts. Starting with a toast with champagne, followed by speeches, and concluded with a dinner in the church, where candles light all the great ornaments, as the König Organ (first half 18th century).

Leaving the church, the marketplace is deserted, but still with some ornamental lights from the Christmas period 🙂
