Meghan’s diet secrets: Prince Harry goes on strict regime as he prepares to wed his Californian girl

Steel-cut oats with bee pollen in the morning, sashimi at lunch, a green juice to keep you going, and a hearty soup for supper. Poor old Prince Harry. This is his reality now. With less than three weeks to go until he weds Meghan Markle in Windsor, the former actress has reportedly put her fiancé on a strict diet. This is a man who grew up eating typical British nursery food (his favourites, according to former Kensington Palace chef Darren McGrady were cottage pie and bananas and custard), and who in the Army was known for his penchant for Kentucky Fried Chicken. Kale smoothies, morning Vinyasa and turmeric cleanses are unlikely to have been part of his routine before he met his Californian girlfriend (one imagines the Royal family is more of the walk-it-off-and-have-another-Dubonnet school of thought than the strict alkaline diet and daily spin class regimen). How on earth will he be coping with his new regime? One thing is for sure: Meghan is in charge. Sources say she has helped Harry to discover juicing, had him replace carbs with quinoa, and is encouraging him to eat less meat. A true Californian, she has always been health conscious, and regularly wrote about her diet and fitness secrets on her blog, The Tig. Whatever regime she has put the Prince on, it seems to be working: he has reportedly lost half a stone. She is not, she has said in the past, a fan of diets as such. No, what Meghan practises is (cue LA term for diet) “lifestyle eating”. So, what do we know about Prince Harry’s new regime?

It will be mainly vegan – Meghan isn’t strictly vegan, but has said in the past that she tries to stick to a vegan diet during the week and then treat herself at the weekend. She said: “I try to eat vegan during the week and then have a little bit more flexibility with what I dig into on the weekends. But at the same time, it’s all about balance. Because I work out the way I do, I don’t ever want to feel deprived. I feel that the second you do that is when you start to binge on things.” Her fridge is usually stocked with “hummus, carrots, a green juice, almond milk”, and a chia seed pudding she makes every week.

Caffeine is out – Meghan revealed in an interview that she tries to avoid caffeine where possible, but particularly in the afternoons, instead opting for a pick-me-up juice. “It’s easy to fall into the trap of rushing for a coffee when you hit that 4pm slump,” she told Today. “But if I blend some apple, kale, spinach, lemon and ginger in my Vitamix in the morning and bring it to work, I always find that sipping on that is a much better boost than a cup of espresso.”

Alcohol is to be limited – Meghan’s lifestyle blog was named after an Italian wine called Tignanello. She adores a “beautiful full red or crisp white”, and has also been known to partake in a “spicy tequila cocktail, negroni or good scotch”, but she limits herself to one, and only at the weekends.  “Do the things you enjoy within reason,” she once said. “Know your body and what works for you and you’ll be fine.”

Meghan has revealed herself to be a keen cookMeghan is seriously into crudités – One of Meghan’s earliest food memories is making crudités to give to people on the set of the TV show Married with Children, where her dad worked as a lighting director. She told Eye Swoon: “I would help make the food trays, and learned how connective food could be – how happy people would be when I walked in with a tray of perfect crudités. It was awesome, and definitely planted the seed of my love for making and sharing food.” Even her dog, Bogart, likes them. She keeps her fridge stocked with hummus and carrots for both of them to munch on .  Could this even be a clue as to one of the canapés at her wedding on May 19?

Every day starts with a shake – And not the delicious chocolatey kind. Meghan’s breakfast is a Clean Cleanse vanilla shake with blueberries. As an alternative, she likes to start the day with a juice – preferably frozen mango with a squeeze of lime, turmeric and coconut water. An acai bowl – made with “fresh berries, manuka honey and bee pollen” – is also a favourite. Fancy one, Harry?

 

Supplements are crucial – “Magnesium, B-12 drops, multivitamin and Cortisol Manager before bed. Sometimes ashwaganda makes it into the mix too!” Could her Prince be following a similar cocktail of vitamins…?

 

No need for a royal cook – Meghan prepares her food from scratch – Every week she makes a batch of chia pudding (if she’s found a way of making it taste like something other than frog’s spawn, I’d like her recipe), and a tray of roasted cauliflower and chickpeas in hot curry powder: “It finds its way into my salads, or as a side dish that I constantly nibble on.”
