Prince Harry asks William to be best man at his Royal wedding to Meghan Markle
The Duke of Cambridge is to be best man at the wedding of his brother Prince Harry to Meghan Markle, missing the FA Cup final to be by their side. The Duke, who has always been the front-runner for the supporting role at the May wedding, is “honoured” to have been asked, Kensington Palace said in a statement. In January, the Duke had disclosed that he had not yet been asked to be best man, joking that it could be a”sensitive subject”. Today, the Palace confirmed that he would take the role, tweeting a series of pictures of the brothers on their Twitter feed. Prince Harry was best man at the 2011 wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, bringing the house down with a heartfelt speech about his older brother and new sister-in-law. In a statement released today, Kensington Palace said: “Prince Harry has asked his brother The Duke of Cambridge to be his Best Man at his wedding to Ms. Meghan Markle. “The Duke of Cambridge is honoured to have been asked, and is very much looking forward to supporting his brother at St George’s Chapel, Windsor on May 19th.” Royal men have traditionally had a “supporter” by their side at their wedding, with both Prince William and Prince Harry now breaking with the convention to use the more modern term of “best man”. In January, the Duke attended an event about male mental health with charity CALM, in which he was asked about being best man, joking: “He [Harry]hasn’t asked me yet, just to clear that up. It could be a sensitive subject.” The Duke went on to speak about his relationship with his brother, emphasising the importance of men speaking openly to one another about their emotions. “Our relationship is closer than it’s been because of the past we’ve been through,” he said. “Losing our mother at a young age, it’s helped us travel through that difficult patch together. You’re like-minded. You go through similar things, it’s a bond and it’s something you know you’ve tackled together and come out better for it. “That’s the thing about being a best mate, inevitable one of you is sometimes on an up while the other is on a down. “You’re always there for each other and repaying that favour.”
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will marry on May 19 at Windsor Castle, with the Duke now expected to organise a stag do for his brother, carry the couple’s wedding rings and speak at their reception. In 2011, Prince Harry did the honours at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, leaving guests in stitches in a speech that reportedly saw him tease his brother about his bald spot, do an impression of him on the phone to Kate and calling him a “dude”.
