Places to Visit in the United Kingdom

However, it’s also very similar to other popular European cities like Paris and Milan. If you’re looking for something a little off the beaten path, the UK is full of hidden gems to explore. If you’re going in the warmer times of the year, check out Edinburgh, with its myriad of art festivals and gorgeous scenery showcasing the finest Scotland has to offer. The National Museum of Scotland can introduce you to the history of the country, and you’ll see more than just kilts and swords. In nearby Glasgow, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is a true treasure for art fans. Far on the northwest side of Scotland, tiny towns like Torridon offer surprises like whale-watching tours, yachting, and camping. Want to see castles? Check out Cardiff, Skye, Windsor or Inverness, where the splendor of the nation’s complex past is in full view. Stirling Castle is likely the most famous castle in Scotland, but if you’re not heading that far north, check out Leeds Castle southeast of London. Some tour companies will even drive you between castles on charter buses, so make sure to investigate whatever region you’re exploring to find the best options.

The medieval city of Canterbury is home to St. Augustine’s Abbey and Canterbury Cathedral. The city was a major pilgrimage site for years, and has a rich and fascinating history. Even if you don’t normally hire tour guides, this is one city where you’ll be missing out if you don’t. For museum offerings, head to Southampton, Manchester, York, or basically any city that has any unique history. Southampton, the port the Titanic departed from in 1912, is home to the SeaCity Museum, while Manchester offers the National Football Museum for die-hard soccer fans. York has an entire free museum dedicated to trains and railroads. If you’re a fan of The Beatles, there’s a museum for you, as well: head to Liverpool to check out The Beatles Story. If you want to spend part of your trip in London, it’s easy enough to hop over to nearby Cambridge, home of the Fitzwilliam Museum and Cambridge University Botanical Gardens. Southend-on-Sea is a beautiful destination for beaches, especially in the summer. High Wycombe is set in the countryside, but still has plenty of shopping and interesting architecture to entertain everyone in your party. While the economy starts to recover, the travel industry will take much longer to reach full capacity again. That means you still have time to book an amazing trip aboard on just about any budget.
